2026 Waltons RTÉ lyric Fm Music for Schools Competition, May 18th

SCS qualified for today’s final in Dublin. We are one of 12 Schools out of hundreds that qualified for the final in the National Concert Hall today The School is so proud of our talented musicians, dancers and singers and many thanks to Ms. Colette Brennan, Music Department for all her work in preparing our troupe for this major event. Many thanks to all our staff who supported the group this year and who travelled up to Dublin.

Founded in 2011, the Waltons RTÉ lyric fm Music for Schools Competition is a non-profit national event celebrating and supporting music in Irish schools.

The Competition is open to all primary and post-primary schools, as well as special schools, in the Republic of Ireland, and hundreds of schools from all 26 counties have participated in previous years.

The Competition’s objective is to promote the enormous benefits of creative music making for young people. Its open nature offers schools the opportunity to think and work creatively in any genre (or genres) of music and with any combination of students, developing an original musical project that has learning potential at every stage of the process.

Class 1E - Fake News Causes Real Harm Campaign

Class 1E created posters to raise awareness regarding the implications of the spreading of misinformation and disinformation. They developed their understanding of what these terms mean and the real-life harm that can be caused through posting and sharing 'fake news.

Misinformation is spreading false or misleading information.

Disinformation is deliberately spreading false or misleading information.

Studies have revealed that on average, fake news spreads six times faster than real news.

It is often created or shared to generate profits or sow division.

The SIFT strategy:

Stop - if you're not sure, do not share. How does this post make you feel? Prioritise facts over feelings.

Investigate the source. Who shared this and why? What might be their motivation?

Find better coverage. Check reliable sources such as established newspapers or news outlets such as RTE.

Trace the original source.

Walton’s Music for School’s Competition

Wishing this fantastic group of musicians, singers and dancers the very best of luck as they take to the stage of the National Concert Hall for the final of the Lyric Fm Walton’s Music for School’s Competition on Monday.

TY Students Enjoy Action-Packed Day in Inchydoney

Our Transition Year students recently headed to the beautiful Inchydoney Beach for an unforgettable activity day filled with energy, laughter, and teamwork.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the surfing session, where students embraced the waves with enthusiasm and determination. Despite a few wipeouts along the way, the atmosphere was full of encouragement, fun, and plenty of smiles as everyone gave it their best effort.

Off the water, students took part in Dunes team-building activities, which brought out fantastic cooperation, communication, and team spirit. From problem-solving challenges to group tasks, it was clear to see strong bonds forming and great teamwork on display throughout.

Overall, it was a brilliant day enjoyed by all — packed with fun, laughter, and memorable moments.

Once again, this TY group proved themselves to be a fantastic bunch, representing the school with positivity and great spirit.

It was enjoyed by all.

Final of UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards

A massive congratulations to our TY students Éabha, Nicola, Doireann and Jodie for reaching the Finals of the Young Environmentalist Awards which took place in the RDS in Dublin yesterday. The girls did a wonderful job of representing SCS and would like to thank everyone who supported them by voting in the People’s Choice Award. They faced stiff competition and while we didn’t take home any trophies it was incredible to witness the passion and creativity that students all around the country are investing in addressing environmental issues such as waste, biodiversity, climate change, pollution and energy.

We would also like to thank the whole school community for their continued effort to separate waste, particularly food waste in order to divert this from landfill and reduce harmful methane emissions. This really is a whole-school effort and we would like to acknowledge and express our gratitude to the many students who have helped collect and separate the food waste bins throughout the year.

Segregation of food waste also fuels the MyGug anaerobic digester which generates a biogas which is used for cooking in the Home Economics room and a liquid feed which serves as a soil enricher in the school’s polytunnels. The Canteen staff, Home Economics and LCA Horticulture students and staff have also been vital contributors to the project. Thanks also to the RE dept for raising funds for charity through the plastic bottle return scheme.

STEM Racing National Competition

Oisín Moore, Jack Foley, Greg Baburkin & Einon Gottschall- Jones represented Skibbereen Community school under the team name 'Shadow Racing 'at this year’s national STEM Racing competition. The event took place in the scenic Saile Sports and Community Centre in Kinsale.

Students were judged on their engineering design, enterprise, marketing, pit display and raced their mode F1 car down a 30m track. Judging included giving verbal presentations to judging panels, justifying their CAD drawings, design decisions, marketing strategies, and DFM approach.

Shadow Racing recorded the 3rd fastest time on the day.

Bike Week

The Tour de Trag was a massive success!

A huge convoy comprising of first years, school staff, Cycle Sense and An Garda Síochána travelled from Skibbereen Community School to Tragumna Beach via Liss Ard and back. Some locals were on hand to support.

It wouldn’t have happened without our super cyclists and the help we received along the way. Thanks so much to Skibbereen Sergeant John McCarthy and Garda Gearóid Whelton for supervising our journey. Thanks to Max and Ruth from Cycle Sense for their leadership. Thanks to LissArd for giving us permission to go through and to Vinny for greeting us. Thanks to our 4th years for their help: Evan O’Sullivan, Edwin Viji, John O’Regan, Amy McCarthy, Ella Murphy and Tara Mann. Thanks to Tony O’Sullivan and the Bam team for their continued support. Gaisce Adventure Tour

As part of the Adventure Tour for Gaisce this year students stayed in the Mountain Forge in Ardfield.

On day one students completed a 13km loop which consisted of amazing views such as Ballycusheen, Dunnycove and Red Strand. The evening of day one was rounded off with pitching the bell tents along with a camp fire and quiz.

Day two started by walking from Mountain Forge back towards the Long strand passing through Rathbarry and Castlefreke Woods where students finished off the hike in the Fish Basket.

All students had an amazing time.

STEM Racing Team

Thank you to Mr Kelly and the Ludgate Hub for supporting our STEM Racing Team.

Our STEM Racing team is proud to represent the school in this exciting international competition, where students design, manufacture, and race miniature CO₂-powered cars. The project combines engineering, design, aerodynamics, manufacturing, marketing, and teamwork, giving students valuable hands-on experience in STEM subjects while developing real-world problem-solving skills.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Ludgate Hub for their generous support of our team. Last year, Ludgate Hub kindly donated a 3D printer, which has become an invaluable tool in our development process. It has enabled us to rapidly prototype components, test design ideas, and produce high-quality parts for our car.

Their contribution has significantly enhanced our ability to innovate and compete at a higher level. We are extremely grateful for their support and their commitment to encouraging young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Thank you, Ludgate Hub, for helping make our STEM Racing journey possible.

1st Year Sports Day
