A massive congratulations to our TY students Éabha, Nicola, Doireann and Jodie for reaching the Finals of the Young Environmentalist Awards which took place in the RDS in Dublin yesterday. The girls did a wonderful job of representing SCS and would like to thank everyone who supported them by voting in the People’s Choice Award. They faced stiff competition and while we didn’t take home any trophies it was incredible to witness the passion and creativity that students all around the country are investing in addressing environmental issues such as waste, biodiversity, climate change, pollution and energy.

We would also like to thank the whole school community for their continued effort to separate waste, particularly food waste in order to divert this from landfill and reduce harmful methane emissions. This really is a whole-school effort and we would like to acknowledge and express our gratitude to the many students who have helped collect and separate the food waste bins throughout the year.

Segregation of food waste also fuels the MyGug anaerobic digester which generates a biogas which is used for cooking in the Home Economics room and a liquid feed which serves as a soil enricher in the school’s polytunnels. The Canteen staff, Home Economics and LCA Horticulture students and staff have also been vital contributors to the project. Thanks also to the RE dept for raising funds for charity through the plastic bottle return scheme.
