Skibbereen Community School bid a sad farewell to the Leaving cert Class of 2025 at their Leaving Cert Graduation Ceremony last Wednesday. Over 750 parents, friends and staff were in attendance to see them graduate. Fr. John Heinhold and Rev. John Ardis officiated at the ceremony.
Mr. O Mahony, Principal, Ms. Burchill, Year Head and Student Rep, Will O Donovan, delivered outstanding speeches that beautifully captured the spirit of this year group—their compassion, resilience, humanity, and the genuine kindness they showed one another, in face of the hardships they endured over their six years. They truly are a remarkable group of young people.
The School Community would like to wish everyone of them the very best of luck in their upcomimg exams and in their future endeavours. The School Community would like to thank all their Teachers, SNA’s , Admin and Auxiliary Staff who journeyed with them. Thanks also to the Parents/Guardians, local Sports Clubs, Organisations and Businesses who supported the school over the time.
Mr. O Mahony mentioned and quoted the famous scientist, Ms. Marie Curie in his speech. “ We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained." "Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood."
Last week saw Mr. Kelly's 1st years take on the role of solicitors in a model courtroom and compete in groups in a series of heated debates on the legacy of Christopher Columbus and his role in the slavery of Native Americans. These debates came about after they had conducted heavy research and compiled their evidence.
This exercise tied in with Learning Strand 1.2 of the Junior Certificate History curriculum whereby students are encouraged to consider controversial issues in history from more than one perspective and discuss historical roots of a controversial issue in the contemporary world.
After some hard-hitting points from both our Prosecution and Defence teams, as well as contributions from our Court Clerks and Jurors it was deemed only right that they got rewarded with ice lollies and chocolate!
We once again thank all students for the huge effort that they have put in over the last couple of weeks and we wish them well in their exams.
Skibbereen Community School hosted a “Safe Summer” presentation for First Years on Tuesday 20th May.
Ms. Katie Mann of Skibbereen Cycle Sense was invited to show the students on how to wear a helmet correctly. Fifth Year students were then invited on stage to tell everyone about an accident they were involved in sending a very clear message that wearing a bike helmet saves lives. Thanks to Odhran Herlihy, Eoghan Whooley, Neill O’ Sullivan and Liam Hogan for this. The broken helmet from that accident was passed around the audience.
Skibbereen based Garda James Crowley said a few words about Road Safety and Mr. Des Quinn and Mr. Tom Collins spoke about Fire Safety. Mr. Gary Minihane and Mr. Brendan Leahy spoke about their role in the Ambulance service. They also showed pictures of real situations.
Mr. Diarmuid O’ Donnabháin spoke about Water Safety before the Coast Guard explained their roles in rescuing people in danger at sea and on land. Mr. Brendan Cahill, Ms. Micheala Cooper, Mr. Nick Murphy, Ms. Emma Burton and Ms. Anu Helina also displayed their equipment and what to do in the event of an emergency.
The afternoon finished off with a raffle of 10 bike helmets thanks to funding secured from Bike Week. A clear message was sent out regarding the importance of safety in Summer. After the presentation, all students received ice creams from Lidl. A big thank you to Roger Earl and Ms. Catherine Burns from the school’s SCP Team for organising this.
We are hugely grateful to all the Emergency Services who gave up their time to visit our school. Thanks also to the BAM staff for their support. Thanks especially to Ms. Orla O’ Sullivan and Ms. Sarah Mc Carthy for organising the event.
