Garda Youth Awards

Congratulation to our 5th year students, Helena Bohane, William Doyle, Chloe McCarthy, Dylan Maloney, Elaine O'Sullivan and Jamie Byrne who won a Garda Youth Award last Friday evening at the awards ceremony in Kinsale. This group of students from Skibbereen Community School made a significant contribution to their community by volunteering their time and energy not only to assist pilgrims with ill health and disabilities during the six-day Cork & Ross Diocese Pilgrimage to Lourdes but also in the months leading up to the pilgrimage.

They organised fundraisers in the local parish and school community making links with parishioners and the wider community. They provided care, companionship, and assistance to vulnerable individuals while in Lourdes, ensuring they had a fulfilling experience.

Their participation in the pilgrimage helped those in need and will hopefully inspire others within their school and local parish to engage in similar acts of service.

The students willingly undertook all preparations on the lead up to the pilgrimage including organising two fundraisers, manual handling course and liaising with other accompanying schools. Once in Lourdes their days included early breakfast morning duties from 7am and assisting pilgrims throughout their daily tasks.

This consisted of prepping over 70 patients which was demanding both physically and personally. Whether it was helping with transportation, attending to the assisted pilgrims' needs, or simply offering companionship through conversation or a singsong, they consistently put the well-being of others before themselves.

Their willingness to step outside their comfort zones, contribute wholeheartedly, and work tirelessly throughout the pilgrimage exemplifies selfless dedication and the true spirit of volunteerism.

These six students have demonstrated that young people can be a great example for future generations, showing that they are compassionate, responsible, and deeply committed to making a difference in their local community.

This demanding role challenges the negative stereotypes of youth and shows that young people are committed helping those less fortunate. They are leading by example and their actions have been widely recognised and appreciated in their local community.

They have encouraged more young people to get involved with organisations such as COPE and Co-Action, luncheon clubs etc. in their local community going forward. Their volunteer work has offered invaluable support to elderly and disabled pilgrims, ensuring they could fully participate in the Lourdes experience, making it more enjoyable and memorable for them.

SCS Paris Trip - Day 1

Bonjour de Paris!

A group of 26 of our 4th & 5th year students, accompanied by their teachers (Ms G. O’Farrell, Ms. D. Hennigan & Mr P. Lynch), set off on an exciting school tour yesterday morning.

We departed from Cork Airport at half past seven in the morning bound for Paris Beauvais Airport.

After landing, a bus took us into the bustling city centre and we made our way to the charming district of Montmartre. There, we explored its iconic sights, including the Moulin Rouge, the Sacré-Cœur Cathedral and the lively Place du Tertre, where artists could be seen painting and selling their work. The group also visited the small vineyard nestled in Montmartre known as Les Vignes du Clos de Montmartre and admired the famous pink-fronted house, La Maison Rose.

Afterwards, they spent some time browsing the local souvenir shops before hopping on the French metro (An experience in itself).

The day continued with a visit to the renowned Notre Dame Cathedral, recently restored following a devastating fire, where they were able to admire its impressive architecture and beautiful stained-glass windows. The three iconic 13th-century rose windows of Notre-Dame de Paris are masterpieces of Gothic art, where the largest measure nearly 13 meters in diameter.

Attendance Initiative

Skibbereen Community School ran another very successful attendance initiative today.

Our principal Mr. Anton O Mahony organised the event to promote good attendance.

Our year heads and senior management team visited all our classes wishing everyone a Happy Easter! Students were encouraged to have a wonderful Easter before returning refreshed for the last term.

Everyone in the school community will be encouraged to have full attendance in the run up to the summer. It is a bit like today if you are not in you can’t win and if you are out you lose out!

Today’s initiative was to acknowledge those who come to school. Attendance matters. Every school day counts and this is reflected in our students’ results. We want everyone to be the best they can be and every student can achieve by simply turning up! You can’t achieve your dreams if you don’t show up to chase them.

There will be a big drive in SCS from now until the end of the year to encourage full attendance for everyone with plenty more surprises along the way.

As the Easter bunny bounces off to deliver more eggs we are wishing you all an Eggcellent Easter!

Field's SuperValu Visit to LCA2 Class

Thank you to Adam and Ruth from Field's SuperValu, Skibbereen for visiting the LCA2 class yesterday afternoon.  This was an insightful talk on the running of their business.

Fields have a passion for good food – a passion that goes back to the day in 1935 when Jack Field first opened the doors in Main Street, Skibbereen.  You are guaranteed to find a dazzling array of food items in their shop at great prices including the best local produce and freshly baked breads/cakes/pastries from their own bakery.

Topics covered were layout of shop floor, distinguishing between different types of display and identifying the specific areas within a retail unit for display.  They also discussed effective merchandising and methods of promotion within their shop and the importance of good atmosphere (music, furnishing & flooring) in the shop. They explained the role of advertising, the media and outside advertising and the importance of it.

We are very grateful to Adam and Ruth for giving up their time to come visit us and for the invaluable information they gave us. We wish them continued success with their business.

5th Year RE Retreat

Today, 5th year students had the opportunity to take a break from the classroom and headed to the scenic valley of Gougane Barra for our annual RE retreat. It was a day designed for them to reflect and connect, and the mix of spring air and stunning scenery did just that.

The day kicked off with a sense of peace as we gathered in the iconic St. Finbarr’s Oratory. In the quiet of the tiny lakeside chapel, we held a short reflection and lit a candle for our intentions.

Afterwards, we took some time to walk through the outdoor Stations of the Cross, appreciating the history and the stillness of the island.

Then, we headed into the forest park for a hike along the nature trails. We got to see the local wildlife, waterfalls and where the River Lee begins its journey. We stopped for lunch together alfresco in the middle of our walk before making our way back down along the trail.

The real value of the day was the chance to spend time together as a group outside of the school walls, so getting away from the books and into the fresh air was exactly what was needed. Whether students were chatting on the trails or just taking in the silence by the lake, it was a great chance to reconnect as a group before this school term comes to an end.

Young Environmentalist Awards

Today our TY students Jodie Anthony, Doireann Flannery, Éabha McCaffrey and Nicola Swanton represented SCS at the Semi-Finals of the Young Environmentalist Awards at Cork Waterworks.

The girls presented their project on food waste and the MyGug anaerobic digester: “Using food to produce food”.  The project involved lots of collaboration from multiple depts such as Sustainability, Home Ec, Woodcraft and Science.

They pitched their project to a panel of 4 judges. Their pitch lasted 7 minutes before a round of questions from the judges. They now have to wait a month before hearing if they have made it through to the final round in Dublin. Best of luck girls!

Afterwards, we went to the Glucksman Gallery in UCC for a quick visit to the dinosaur exhibit.
