Transition Year Home Economics students had a wonderful morning taking part in a sugar craft workshop led by the talented Caroline and Joanne. With creativity flowing, our students designed and crafted their own sugar pieces before carefully icing their Christmas cakes. Igloos and penguins were a popular style of decoration this year!
The room was filled with fun, laughter, and festive spirit as students learned new skills and expressed their artistic flair. It was a busy and rewarding workshop that left everyone proud of their creations.
A heartfelt thank you to Joanne from Cork Sugarcraft Association, and Caroline from Cakes by Caroline B, for sharing their expertise and making the experience so enjoyable. Thank you also to our own Martina McCarthy for supporting everyone on the day.
On Friday 20th November, Transition Year students had the privilege of hearing from Mikey Power, who shared his powerful story about overcoming substance and alcohol abuse. Mikey spoke openly about the challenges he faced and the impact of poor choices on his life. His message was clear: no matter how far you’ve gone down the wrong path, it’s never too late to turn around.
Through honesty and courage, Mikey reminded students that one right decision can change everything. His journey from struggle to success is a testament to resilience and hope, encouraging young people to make positive choices and seek support when needed.
Thank you, Mikey, for inspiring our TYs to believe in second chances and the power of making the right decision.
Pictured is our U16 boys Gaelic Football Team that played Mount Saint Michael in Rosscarbery today.
In November we remember our loved ones who have sadly passed away.
Pictured are our first years in our Garden of Remembrance.
They were given a presentation by Ms. Eilish Hurley and Ms. Orla O’Sullivan. They were told that Mr. O’Mahony organised the memorial garden and were told about staff and students from SCS who have sadly passed away.
We would encourage everyone to take the time to visit our Garden of Remembrance.
Pictured here are our first years on a friendship walk.
Each student took part in these purposeful walks designed to encourage and strengthen friendships between each other as they journey through first year.
They had to speak to, be nice to and accompany each of their classmates along the way.
They are already looking forward to their next activity as part of Well-being in Skibbereen Community School.
Thanks to Ms. Orla O’Sullivan, Ms. Denise Hourihane, Ms. Caroline O’Donovan and Ms. Sarah McCarthy for organising.
Well done to first year student Vincent O’Regan whose 3650 John Deere tractor won the best machine at the recent Tragumna Threshing. Vincent and his family carefully restored it fully from purchasing it in Offaly.
Vincent won the perpetual Richard Courtney Cup. Thanks to Vincent for giving a presentation on this in class with Ms. Orla O’Sullivan.
Skibbereen Community School are delighted to support the Christmas Shoebox Appeal again this year.
Pictured here are a selection of the shoe boxes.
We are very proud of the wonderful support from everyone. Thanks very much to all who helped with this appeal, from generous donations to packing these special boxes.
Thanks to Ms. Sally Daly for her continued support and to Mr. Aaron O’Riordan for organising.
These boxes are now on the way to children abroad who don’t get any gifts for Christmas.

We are delighted to be supporting Skibbereen Tidy Towns after their recent Gold Medal. We are thrilled to be part of their success.
Many thanks Skibbereen Tidy Towns, Cork County Council, Ms. Orla O’Sullivan, Mr. Aaran O’Riordan, Ms. Anne O’Farrell, Mr. Conor Uhl and Ms. Gretta Burchill for organising.
Well done to 4th year student Aran O’Driscoll who won the recent Baltimore Angling Competition.
Aran and his team won this competition on his family boat called ‘The Blue Thunder’ that is normally based in Schull.
It a huge achievement as it is their second win in two years and they beat some stiff competition.
First years have been settling into SCS.
In science they have been studying new topics in the Biological World section including cellular structure. As part of this learning students had to design and build a model of either a plant or animal cell.
The models they produced were absolutely brilliant and today to end Science Week we acknowledged this endeavour, creativity and work that went into producing these fabulous models.
Well done everyone.
As part of Science Week celebrations on Thursday, we were delighted to welcome David Sheehy of Boveq Scanning Services to speak with our 5th and 6th year Agricultural Science students.
David delivered a fascinating and highly informative session on scanning, dairy breeding and artificial insemination, giving students a real insight into the technology and decision making behind modern livestock management.
To the students’ amazement, he even brought along a real cow’s reproductive system, providing a unique hands-on learning opportunity that brought classroom theory to life.
Throughout the talk, David covered a wide range of important topics including EBI (Economic Breeding Index), key dairy breeds, the advantages of A.I., the use of sexed semen, synchronisation protocols, and the role of scanning in improving herd performance.
Students were fully engaged from start to finish and gained a much deeper understanding of the science and technology shaping the future of Irish agriculture. It was an extremely enjoyable, practical and educational experience for all involved.
A huge thank you to David for visiting us and sharing his expertise.
5th year Biology students as part of science week took on the escape room challenge.
The Digestive System was the theme where students having answered a series of questions had to solve the associated puzzles to crack the code. It was tense for a while as teams criss-crossed the lab, collecting the information they needed to solve the puzzles.
Well done to all the participating teams.
Second years have been busy in science, designing and engineering energy transforming devices.
As part of science week they tested their devices. Similar designs were pitted against each other in a race or test. Prizes were presented to those who excelled in their design and build.
Well done to all students. Outstanding work overall.
As part of Science week class 1B got a chance to dissect a lambs heart with help from 4th year Applied Science students.
5th year Biology students learnt all about the urinary system and got a chance to dissect a lambs kidney. They also made models of the kidney to help them in their understanding of how it works.
