As part of Science Week celebrations on Thursday, we were delighted to welcome David Sheehy of Boveq Scanning Services to speak with our 5th and 6th year Agricultural Science students.
David delivered a fascinating and highly informative session on scanning, dairy breeding and artificial insemination, giving students a real insight into the technology and decision making behind modern livestock management.
To the students’ amazement, he even brought along a real cow’s reproductive system, providing a unique hands-on learning opportunity that brought classroom theory to life.
Throughout the talk, David covered a wide range of important topics including EBI (Economic Breeding Index), key dairy breeds, the advantages of A.I., the use of sexed semen, synchronisation protocols, and the role of scanning in improving herd performance.
Students were fully engaged from start to finish and gained a much deeper understanding of the science and technology shaping the future of Irish agriculture. It was an extremely enjoyable, practical and educational experience for all involved.
A huge thank you to David for visiting us and sharing his expertise.
