Congratulations to Evan Collins, Niamh O’Driscoll, Abaigh Buckley, Adam O’Donovan, Paddy Collins, Jack Heaton Jones, Ailise O’Sullivan and Naoise Quinn, students from Skibbereen Community School who each received a Garda Youth Award last Friday night in The West Lodge Hotel in Bantry.

The school were delighted to welcome Ms. Carrie McCarthy lecturer in MTU to Skibbereen Community School today.
She gave three wonderful presentations to third, fourth and fifth years on nutrition and tips for exam students. The student body found it very informative especially the fact that they should be having seven fruit and vegetables a day and the importance of hydration for well-being.
There was a huge demand for her presentations and we look forward to seeing her back again.

Skibbereen Community School were delighted to support the Skibbereen Cycle Bus this morning.
The sun was shining at 8.25am as we took off from Cois Caol and made our way to all the local Primary Schools: Abbeystrewery NS, St. Patrick’s NS, An Gaelscoil and St. Joseph’s NS.
Accompanied by Cycle Sense, supportive parents, Skibbereen based Garda Jason Daly, Principals Ms. Audrey O’ Sullivan and Mr. Alan Foley, it was a huge success.
We are encouraging all of our students to take part in the upcoming Skibbereen Bike Week. We look forward to seeing them cycling their bikes up the hill to our school and to continue to support this Cycle Bus!
Tomasz Firek of local CNC company Versa CNC, taking 3rd year students, Oisín Moore and Michael Wynn through the process of CNC routing.
Versa CNC are CNC routing a F1 car body ahead of the F1 in schools National finals which take place in Kinsale Sports and Community Centre on Tuesday 13th May.
Tomasz gave a demonstration on using the software to generate the tool paths, on the simulation software, on setting up the tooling and machine ahead of routing and cut the first prototype on the machine.
The students found this training very interesting and informative.
SCS 3rd year students Oisin Moore, Michael Wynn, Aran O Driscoll and Paddy Jedryszczyk have qualified under the team name `Shadow Racing`.
Congratulations to BuzzGum (Leo Farrell, Kegan Evans and Conor Worboys) who are 1 of 5 schools in Ireland to be selected to attend the Patch Lab Innovation camp.
As a result, these 5 enterprises have been invited to showcase their businesses at the National finals of the Student Enterprise Programme in the Mullingar Park Hotel, on Thursday 8th May.
A wonderful achievement for these three budding entrepreneurs and we wish them all the best.
A big thank you to Sharon and Gráinne who visited our class today. Both local entrepreneurs, Sharon runs pure_fitness_west_cork and Gráinne runs The Favourite/Style Bar in Skibbereen. They gave a passionate talk about their careers to date and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of running their own business but also encouraged the students to follow their dreams and stressed to pursue a career they really enjoy.
An enjoyable morning for all and thanks to Jason and Dylan for preparing the refreshments.

This exchange had been a huge success and we wish to thank all our host families for accommodating our American students. The trip was a massive success and only made possible by a community effort both here in Skibbereen and in Boston.
We are very grateful to Ms. Kate Ciulla our link teacher in Scituate Boston, and to Ms. Brenda O’Connor and her team for their help.
We wish to acknowledge the wonderful hospitality we received each day from everyone who supported the school. Thank you to Kate Jacob from Jacobs, Baltimore for her hospitality on Monday night. On Tuesday we wish to thank Pa and Ger Carey for their hospitality in the Horse and Hound. On Wednesday we wish to sincerely thank our retired colleague Mr. Mick Murphy for organising kayaking in lough Hyne. On Thursday we wish to acknowledge the wonderful hospitality we received in the Whale’s Tail in Clonakilty and De Barra’s. On Friday evening we wish to thank Christine and her team in the Church Restaurant in Skibbereen. On Friday night we also wish to acknowledge Paula McCarthy and Lizzie Henwood Broderick for their hospitality in The Skibbereen Eagle.
We are so grateful to Mr. Damien Long and his wonderful team as well as Bam for their constant professionalism. Finally we sincerely appreciate the effort that all the staff members involved made throughout the week in organising the exchange this year. We are already looking forward to the next one.

On days 9 and 10 our Boston friends went to Dublin. There was a huge send off on Saturday morning. We were sad to see them leave.
Our History teacher Mr. Luke Carolan was their tour guide and we were very thankful to him and to Phil from Long’s buses for giving up their time to show them the sights and scenery of Dublin.
The group visited Trinity Library, Dublin Castle, Grafton Street and Government Buildings. Thankfully the sun continued shining for the two days.
Then it was off to Dublin Airport for their return journey home. It is hard to imagine that the trip is over!
Day 8 started out in Skibbereen Heritage Centre. We were very grateful to Ms. Terri Kearney for her excellent presentation to our students. At the end of this we officially handed over the “Christening of the Patrick Gallagher” booklet to Ms. Terri Kearney. This was a very significant and poignant moment as it travelled all the way from Scituate to its forever home in Skibbereen. We are very thankful to Ms. Brenda O’Connor from Scituate for organising this.
Afterwards the students spent an hour in Skibbereen to enjoy the sights and shops. We can confirm that all of our wonderful Skibbereen businesses did a bumper trade today! From coffees, jewellery, clothing, books and designer footwear we have something for everyone. Local resident Mr. Eamonn Barry & others took the time out to say hello.
With everyone happy with their purchases for home, we made our way back to Skibbereen Community School where our Principal Mr. Anton O’Mahony and our TY Coordinator Mr. Conor Uhl designed a specific timetable to give our American students a taste of what schooling is like in Ireland.
They attended their first Irish class thanks to Ms. Mary O’Driscoll and Ms. Mary O’Mahony. Ms. Sarah McCarthy organised a Home Economics class baking scones and Mr. Uhl organised a Woodwork class where everyone made coasters.
Our American friends got an opportunity to use our canteen too and were very impressed with their salads and soup. We will be very sad to see them go at 7am tomorrow morning where they will be travelling by bus to Dublin to spend two days sightseeing.
Well done to the SCS students who were among the hundreds of students participating in Day 1 of the South Munster Schools Athletics Championships at MTU in sweltering conditions yesterday.
Remarkably all nine students finished in the top 4 and claimed 8 medals between them;
6 gold medals, 1 silver and 1 bronze, with two of the gold medallists setting new South Munster Schools records;
Caoimhe Flannery in the Senior (U19)Girls' 1500m Steeplechase and Sam Kingston in the Junior Boys'(u15) Javelin.
Other gold medallists were;

Katie Kingston Senior Girls' Javelin
Elaine O'Sullivan Intermediate (u17) Javelin
Laura Mae Coakley Junior (u15) Girls' Javelin

Bronze Medallist was Evan O’Sullivan, Intermediate Boys' Javelin.
4th; Dáire Bohane Intermediate Boys' Triple Jump.
The top 3 in each category will proceed to the Munster Schools' Finals on May 17th.
Many of these athletes will compete in a different event on Day 2 of the South Munsters on Friday May 9th.
Day 7 started out in Skibbereen Community School.
We were very grateful to Mr. Ryan Beatty, Ms. Kellie Bell and Ms. Jenn Wade Baker for giving a presentation to our students at our 3rd year assembly this morning about Boston. It was very informative and our 3rd years were appreciative of the effort they made.
Afterwards, It was time to go surfing in Clonakilty. The surf was definitely up. We had a fantastic tour of Galley Lighthouse and are sincerely grateful to Mr. Gerard Butler for giving of his time to us.
It was an action packed day in Inchydoney from surfing to beach games. We learned that it doesn’t matter how many times you fall but what counts is how many times you get back up! We are delighted to say we were very good at surfing at the end of the session.

We are really looking forward to tomorrow. We will be visiting the iconic Skibbereen Heritage Centre and spending the day in Skibbereen Community School where our Principal Mr. Anton O’ Mahony and our TY Coordinator Mr. Conor Uhl have designed a specific timetable to give our American students a taste of what schooling is like in Ireland.
Day 6 and our students headed off to the Costa del Clonakilty or Clon as it is more commonly known.
Their first stop was The Michael Collins House where students were given an inciteful and informative tour about the life and times of Michael Collins and the political scene of the twentieth century. They saw multiple artefacts from this time period too. They were really interested in learning about this fascinating figure and time.
Afterwards, students had enough time to explore this picturesque town. Many students sampled some of the wonderful delights on offer. Iced coffees instead of the more traditional ice creams are proving very popular with this lovely weather.

The weather was fabulous and everyone was in great form. Our Principal Mr. Anton O’Mahony and our TY Coordinator organised a great send off for us.
We took off from SCS to Rosscarbery for Tubing and Pitch and Putt. It was a first time for most of our students. Mr. O’Shea our Pitch and Putt expert provided very valuable lessons to us on the course.

The evening finished off on a high note thanks to Pa and Ger Carey in the Horse and Hound. Everyone was entertained by the music session and we are deeply grateful to them for hosting the event and to everyone for supporting it.
