Mini Company

Congratulations to BuzzGum (Leo Farrell, Kegan Evans and Conor Worboys) who are 1 of 5 schools in Ireland to be selected to attend the Patch Lab Innovation camp.

As a result, these 5 enterprises have been invited to showcase their businesses at the National finals of the Student Enterprise Programme in the Mullingar Park Hotel, on Thursday 8th May.

A wonderful achievement for these three budding entrepreneurs and we wish them all the best.

Bring a Career to Class

A big thank you to Sharon and Gráinne who visited our class today. Both local entrepreneurs, Sharon runs pure_fitness_west_cork and Gráinne runs The Favourite/Style Bar in Skibbereen. They gave a passionate talk about their careers to date and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of running their own business but also encouraged the students to follow their dreams and stressed to pursue a career they really enjoy.

An enjoyable morning for all and thanks to Jason and Dylan for preparing the refreshments.

Boston Students Visit - Days 9 & 10

On days 9 and 10 our Boston friends went to Dublin. There was a huge send off on Saturday morning. We were sad to see them leave.

Our History teacher Mr. Luke Carolan was their tour guide and we were very thankful to him and to Phil from Long’s buses for giving up their time to show them the sights and scenery of Dublin.

The group visited Trinity Library, Dublin Castle, Grafton Street and Government Buildings. Thankfully the sun continued shining for the two days.

Then it was off to Dublin Airport for their return journey home. It is hard to imagine that the trip is over!

Boston Students Visit - Day 8

Day 8 started out in Skibbereen Heritage Centre. We were very grateful to Ms. Terri Kearney for her excellent presentation to our students. At the end of this we officially handed over the “Christening of the Patrick Gallagher” booklet to Ms. Terri Kearney. This was a very significant and poignant moment as it travelled all the way from Scituate to its forever home in Skibbereen. We are very thankful to Ms. Brenda O’Connor from Scituate for organising this.

Afterwards the students spent an hour in Skibbereen to enjoy the sights and shops. We can confirm that all of our wonderful Skibbereen businesses did a bumper trade today! From coffees, jewellery, clothing, books and designer footwear we have something for everyone. Local resident Mr. Eamonn Barry & others took the time out to say hello.

With everyone happy with their purchases for home, we made our way back to Skibbereen Community School where our Principal Mr. Anton O’Mahony and our TY Coordinator Mr. Conor Uhl designed a specific timetable to give our American students a taste of what schooling is like in Ireland.

They attended their first Irish class thanks to Ms. Mary O’Driscoll and Ms. Mary O’Mahony. Ms. Sarah McCarthy organised a Home Economics class baking scones and Mr. Uhl organised a Woodwork class where everyone made coasters.

Our American friends got an opportunity to use our canteen too and were very impressed with their salads and soup. We will be very sad to see them go at 7am tomorrow morning where they will be travelling by bus to Dublin to spend two days sightseeing.

Afterwards, It was time to go surfing in Clonakilty. The surf was definitely up. We had a fantastic tour of Galley Lighthouse and are sincerely grateful to Mr. Gerard Butler for giving of his time to us.

It was an action packed day in Inchydoney from surfing to beach games. We learned that it doesn’t matter how many times you fall but what counts is how many times you get back up! We are delighted to say we were very good at surfing at the end of the session.

Thanks to Mr. Conor Uhl for organising, Mr. Ryan Beattie, Ms. Jenn Wade Baker, Ms. Kellie Bell, Mr. Conor Uhl and Mr. Patrick Hayes for accompanying.

We are really looking forward to tomorrow. We will be visiting the iconic Skibbereen Heritage Centre and spending the day in Skibbereen Community School where our Principal Mr. Anton O’ Mahony and our TY Coordinator Mr. Conor Uhl have designed a specific timetable to give our American students a taste of what schooling is like in Ireland.

Many thanks to Jerome for his support, Mr. Conor Uhl TY Coodinator and Mr. Whooley, Year Head.

Boston Students Visit - Day 6

Day 6 and our students headed off to the Costa del Clonakilty or Clon as it is more commonly known.

Their first stop was The Michael Collins House where students were given an inciteful and informative tour about the life and times of Michael Collins and the political scene of the twentieth century. They saw multiple artefacts from this time period too. They were really interested in learning about this fascinating figure and time.

Afterwards, students had enough time to explore this picturesque town. Many students sampled some of the wonderful delights on offer. Iced coffees instead of the more traditional ice creams are proving very popular with this lovely weather.

Thanks to Mr. Conor Uhl for organising, Mr. Ryan Beattie, Ms. Jenn Wade Baker, Ms. Kellie Bell and Ms. Michelle O’Brien for accompanying. The Americans are liking our Wednesday half day and we can’t wait for our trip back to Clonakilty tomorrow. Surfs up!

Thanks to Sean and Damien Long from Long’s buses for their professionalism today.

Boston Students Visit to Ireland - Day 5

The weather was fabulous and everyone was in great form. Our Principal Mr. Anton O’Mahony and our TY Coordinator organised a great send off for us.

We took off from SCS to Rosscarbery for Tubing and Pitch and Putt. It was a first time for most of our students. Mr. O’Shea our Pitch and Putt expert provided very valuable lessons to us on the course.

Thanks to Mr. Conor Uhl for organising, Mr. Ryan Beattie, Ms. Jenn Wade Baker, Ms. Kellie Bell and Mr. Padraig O’Shea for accompanying.

The evening finished off on a high note thanks to Pa and Ger Carey in the Horse and Hound. Everyone was entertained by the music session and we are deeply grateful to them for hosting the event and to everyone for supporting it.

We can’t wait for our trip to Clonakilty tomorrow! Thanks to Eugene from Longs buses for his professionalism today.

Boston Students Visit Ireland

Day 4 of the Boston student’s visit to Ireland got off to a great start. The weather was fabulous and everyone was in great form.

We took off from SCS to Lough Hyne. The students were offered two choices. They could climb the hill with Ryan and Órla or take the alternative route along the lake thanks to Jenn and Kellie. The views were spectacular.

It was off to Baltimore next. This proved to be very popular with everyone with Iced caramel lattes, chocolate chip flapjacks, Mars bars, lots of “candy”, yellow snacks and ice creams purchased. We all boarded our boat thanks to Martin and Kieran Driscoll.

In Sherkin we walked to Cow Strand where students were flying a kite, partaking in sand castle competitions and of course some GAA thanks to Eoin Coppinger and Danny O’Sullivan for sourcing a ball. A fabulous day was had. The sun kept shining and the group have bonded so well. It is nice to know that the GAA have recruited a few extra fans after the day and there is more to come.

Currently there is serious American interest in the traditional “Irish Snack Box”. Penneys got several mentions and questions were being asked about our finger saluting to each other in cars! Penneys and some of our local chippers will be visited in the coming days.

Thanks to Mr. Conor Uhl for organising, Mr. Ryan Beattie, Ms. Jenn Wade Baker, Ms. Kellie Bell and Ms. Orla O’Sullivan for accompanying and to Mr. Damien O’Driscoll our bus driver for his professionalism.

5th Year Students Explore Options with MTU

Our 5th Year students started off this last term of 5th year by attending  a very informative presentation by Caroline Kearney, Schools Liaison Officer at Munster Technological University (MTU). Caroline provided an overview of the many courses available across MTU’s Cork and Kerry campuses and shared valuable advice on preparing for CAO choices. Huge thanks to Caroline for visiting SCS today.

Students were encouraged to research courses carefully, organise work experience in areas of interest, and talk to professionals about their careers over the summer months. These steps will support them in making confident, informed decisions about their futures.

See https://www.mtu.ie/ for more information.

Senior Cycle Ecology Field Study to Fota Wildlife park and Education Centre

5th year Biology students headed east early on a bright sunny April morning to complete the Woodland habitat study in Fota wildlife park.

Firstly they were given a very informative lecture in the Education Centre on site on the principles of ecology, biodiversity and conservation. They then headed across the park to complete the practical work and put their knowledge into action.

A great learning experience was had by all. The glorious sunshine added to the day.

Happy Easter Everyone

The School Community would like to wish all our Staff, Students and their families a very Happy Easter!
