Second Years celebrating World Kindness Day and acknowledging Anti Bullying Week in their SPHE and Religion classes.
5th year students took part in the Escape Room Challenge today. Cracking the code using their knowledge of the digestive system allowed them to escape the lab!
Fun for many, frustrating for a few.
Guest speaker, Stephen O' Sullivan from Teagasc, spoke to all 5th and 6th year Agricultural Science students today.
He discussed all things sheep, from lowland and hill production to breeding, feeding, housing and sustainability.
Our students greatly enjoyed the opportunity to learn from Stephen's personal experiences and to ask questions, helping them to better understand the subject.
We are grateful for his time and generosity in helping to enrich our learning community.
Skibbereen Community & Family Resource Centre are running a pilot programme in the Skibbereen and Family resource centre to support youth well-being. It will take place over 10 themed sessions, max of 8 young people aged between 13-17.

STEM South West Expo 2024 Annual Showcase Launched to Inspire the Next Generation of Innovators
Call on Students, Parents and Teachers to discover how Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths (STEM) subjects can lead to lifelong skills and exciting career opportunities.
STEM South West is back for its sixth year, promising to be the biggest and best one yet – this time taking over Cork City Hall on Wednesday November 20th from 4pm to 8pm. Event organisers are calling on secondary students, parents and teachers to join them for an exciting afternoon journey within the world of STEM.
The theme of this year’s Expo is “The World Needs You: Solving Global Challenges with STEM”. The event will showcase how STEM careers and a STEM education can address real-world problems that impact climate change, healthcare, robotics, AI and medtech.
Visitors will get to explore exhibits from some of the biggest employers in the country, including Johnson & Johnson, DePuy Synthes, Stryker, Gilead Sciences, Astellas, PM Group, MTU, UCC, Analog Devices, Horner, Astellas, and many more.

Many thanks to Katie, Timmy and Bradley from CycleSense Skibbereen for teaching our TY students; Adam, Richard, Vygantas, Kevin, Ryan, Cathal, Callum, Michal and Ned some bike mechanic skills to help them upcycle unwanted bicycles. Thanks to the lads for signing up to the programme.
Michelle Power presented a very informative talk to 6th year students recently on Quercus Scholarships at UCC and on the CAO process.
This is an important time for students as they begin the application process. Michelle explained how the CAO system works and the importance of “order of preference” when listing courses. She also discussed the benefits of scholarships in particular the excellent UCC Quercus scholarships programme. Thank you to Michelle for taking the time to visit SCS
2nd years took part in an electricity escape room challenge as part of Science Week.
Well done to the winners, Emma Browne and Alianne McCarthy who cracked the code in a record breaking time!
2nd place was Lee Roycroft and Aiden Browne and 3rd place goes to Conall Whooley, Niall Hodnett and Fintan Deasy.
5th year Agricultural Science students took part in an investigation to calculate the population of earthworms in an area on a sunny afternoon.
Earthworms play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, particularly in soil health and agricultural productivity.
Earthworms burrow through the soil, creating a network of channels that allows air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the earth. This aeration improves the structure of the soil, making it less compacted and more porous.
Hard look to our senior boys footballers who were defeated by Mercy Mounthawk today in the Corn Uí Mhuirí.

The Agricultural Photography Competition is open to all SCS students.
On Tuesday November 19th, teenagers from across Cork County will participate in this year’s Teen Talk event which focuses on promoting positive mental health. The event, hosted by Cork County Council will be held at the Radisson Hotel in Little Island, Cork.

Students in SPHE class have all been reminded to be kind to one another and to look out for each other.
Hard luck to our U16 boys basketball team who were narrowly beaten by AG Cork City today.
The final score was 31 points to 28.
Day 10 was again another fabulous day.
It started off with a great breakfast of waffles, maple syrup, cereals, coffee, eggs, fruit, bacon and croissants.
We took a ferry from Liberty State Park. We visited Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty. We visited the 9/11 memorial, a sad and poignant location. We saw the “survivor tree” and a single white rose acknowledging the birthday of one of those killed. We saw The World Trade Centre, Chinatown, Rockefeller Centre and Little Italy.
We had lunch in Chinatown. Some had shrimp rolls, others lasagne and others spaghetti bolognese. We saw an ice skating rink with plans well afoot for Christmas with lots of Christmas holiday shops.
We made our way to Queens. We passed by the Oculus which cost $4.2 billion to build. We also saw St. Paul’s Chapel, the little chapel that survived the September 11th attack.
Before we went back on the bus to go to the airport we spotted some filming taking place around the Rockefeller Centre. We are not at liberty to divulge anything as it was all top secret!
Day 9 was again a wonderful day.
We were so thankful to everyone who made an effort to send us off from Scituate High School. The same faces who welcomed us turned up again. Scituate, and Scituate High School pulled out all the stops again for us with Brenda up all night baking for us just in case we starved on our bus journey! Stocked up with her brownies, cookies and water it was off to New York.
Our bus driver David gave excellent commentary on route to New York. We passed through five states: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. We passed Yale University in New Haven, The New York Giants Stadium and the headquarters of WWE.
In New York City we met our guide Derek who took us on a tour of Central Park. We passed the Dakota building where John Lennon and Yoko Ono lived and where John was shot. We saw Bethesda Fountain, the Strawberry Fields and walked over Bow Bridge, a spot that’s popular for any future proposals! We were in the Ramble, Columbus Circle, Upper West Side, Lincoln Centre & Juilliard School of Music. We saw kids with back packs bigger than their bodies, dog walkers, costume characters in Time Square like Elmo, Spider-Man and Mickey Mouse.
Students really liked the Grand Slam Gift shop, bought souvenir gift cups, saw Hell’s Kitchen, and then we went to the American Museum of Natural History. We had a lovely dinner in The Hard Rock Cafe where we spoke to Sage who had proud Irish heritage.
We walked through Time Square to get to the musical, “Back to the Future”. Everyone had a wonderful night at the musical. Everyone slept well in their hotel rooms.
We had our own private security guard called Judy. She monitored everything for the night on our corridor as we all slept safe and sound!
