Days 7 and 8 students spent time with their host families and friends.
Some went to Salem, some went to Boston and some went to Cape Cod for some “fun time”.
Day 6 was enjoyed by all. It started out in Wrentham, a discounted premium outlet centre. We left a lot of euros there but we couldn’t resist. At one point it was a popular Christmas shopping destination for the Irish flying in from Shannon for the weekend with empty bags.
Then it was off to the Gillette Stadium Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in the USA and home of the New England Patriots Football team.
Ms. Brenda O’ Connor coordinated the day and we were very appreciative that there was someone responsible for keeping an eye on our purchases allowing us to look for more. One student was thrilled at getting a T shirt for 9 dollars. Other purchases included hoodies, seets, pizza, body spray, base ball hat, wallet, a bomber jacket, socks and a small American size pizza slice for one!
The Scituate West Cork Committee hosted the chaperones at ‘Davio’s’ - a well respected Boston Italian Restaurant with a branch at the stadium.
The students had a wonderful night at the Homecoming Dance and will spend the weekend with their host families.
Munster Programming Training (MPT) 2024-25 - Saturday morning classes at UCC open for booking.
Hosted by the School of Computer Science at University College Cork, the MPT programmes offer an excellent opportunity for secondary school students with an interest in computers to enhance their ICT skills. The MPT Senior and MPT Coding for Girls Programmes will start on November 9th, with classes running on Saturday mornings from 10 am – 1 pm. Please note that MPT Junior has sold out. Happy Halloween everyone ! Well done to Staff and Students who dressed up for “Freaky Friday” and took part in our parade. You all were fantastic!! Many thanks to those students who decorated the school, thanks to Ms. Leiber and her Dancing Troupe and Ms. McCarthy who coordinated the event. Great Job guys!!
Day 5 we went to the Plymouth/Patauxet Plantation Museum for a tour. We were accompanied by Ms. Brenda O’ Connor, Ms. Christine Walsh and bus driver Mr. Kevin Mc Kenna. We saw a re-enactment of a 17th Century village with villagers speaking as if they were from that time.
We were very thankful to Mr. John Buckley and Mr. Tim White for their guided tour of Plymouth Register of Deeds. We saw the original primary source documents of the deeds of Plymouth, the original will of the Pilgrim soldier Myles Standish, and the document that gave the USA the right to swear in a jury of 12 “honest” men. Each student was given a packet of informative documents about the beginning of Plymouth colony. They treated us to a beautiful lunch and spent a lot of time with us answering our questions. Their enthusiasm was inspiring and their warmth will never be forgotten. The students enjoyed going to “Mary Lou’s Coffee” afterwards ordering various American drinks: iced coffee with milk, iced coffee with milk and vanilla, iced coffee with caramel, Pepsi and Fanta.
We finished our day by going to a Homecoming Football Game. The atmosphere was electric. Scituate High School footballers, cheerleaders and dancers were a spectacle to behold. They certainly made their school very proud and everyone enjoyed it.
Day 4 in Boston was an action packed day with Ms. Brenda O’ Connor and expertly coordinated by Mr. Jim Canavan.
Before we had our guided tours of Fenway Colleges our students were drinking iced lattes, strawberry açai refreshers, iced coffees, and pumpkin lattes, a far cry from Barry’s tea!
We toured Emmanuel where we were treated to a very welcome breakfast buffet.
We toured Simmons and the Mass College of Pharmacy before lunch. We were very privileged that President of Mass College of Art Ms. Mary Grant and Vice President Mr. Bob Perry formerly met us and organised a wonderful lunch and a goodie bag for everyone before we got a guided tour.
We finished our guided tour in Wentworth and returned back to a wonderful surprise. The host families presented our students with a Scituate High School Jersey. Everyone was delighted.
The evening ended on a high with the Scituate committee and their spouses organising a special event for Ms. Colette Brennan and Ms. Orla O’Sullivan in the local restaurant “Tinker’s Son”. “Tinker’s Son” is owned by Ballincollig restauranteur Brian Houlihan.

Well done to our TY students who raised over €1,400 recently for the Mercy Hospital Foundation.
Hard luck to our senior footballers who were defeated by St. Pats of Castleisland in the first round of the Corn Uí Mhuirí in Kenmare today. The final score was 2-13 to 2-09.
The RE Department in SCS are participating in the Team Hope Shoe Box Appeal again this year and we would love your help.
Team Hope is an Irish, Christian and child-focused international development organisation. Founded in 2010, they work in Africa and Eastern Europe to help children affected by poverty or marginalisation.
Day 3 was an action packed day. We were delighted to have Ms. Brenda O’Connor and Mr. John J. O’Sullivan board members of ‘The Scituate Sister Committee of West Cork’ accompany us.
The day started off with a guided tour of Boston taking in the history of Whitey Bulger, the first Dunkin Donut Store and Chinatown to name but a few.
On arrival we were given an escorted and interactive tour of The Boston Tea Museum. We had a delicious lunch at Wahlburgers and we were honoured that the Consul General of Ireland in Boston in charge of New England Sighle FitzGerald organised a meeting with us before visiting Fenway Park.
We travelled by train back to Scituate and had a lovely pizza in Cosmos. We were sincerely grateful to members of the Select Board of Scituate Ms. Karen Canfield, Mr. Jamie Gilmore, Mr. Andrew Goodrich, Ms. Karen Connolly and Ms. Susan Harrison who formerly welcomed our students to Scituate. They really made us feel welcome by reminding us all that Scituate is our home and we are always welcome. They also said that people say the ocean is what separates us but there is only an ocean between us. We really are very closely connected and it is very evident that this is the case this week.
The evening ended on a high with a spectacular concert in Scituate High School. There is no doubt that they are very passionate about music and have a very talented music department.

Over the past few weeks 5th year mentors have linked with their first-year groups to see how they have been settling into life in SCS.
Mentors are a great asset to the first-year students, helping them with any queries or concerns they may have and offering advice from their years spent here. They remember when they were in first year and know exactly what it means to have someone to support them.

KENMARE GAA PITCH
Day 2 of our Boston trip began in Scituate High School. Ms. Colette Brennan and Ms. Orla O’Sullivan were formerly welcomed by their Principal Mr. Marc Loranger. This school exchange is now well established with regular communication between the two schools.
Our students spent the morning attending regular classes with their host students whilst the two teachers were given a guided tour by Ms. Kate Sciula who is our liaison teacher in the school. Key messages like “You are important” are prominent around the building.
Our students performed a special concert of traditional Irish Music and dance to a captive audience in the school’s spectacular auditorium. We are very thankful to Ms. Colette Brennan for organising this and to Situate High School for facilitating it. Thanks to Ultan, Chloe, Eimear, Oscar and the two Graces for their fabulous performance.
We were thrilled that local man Mr. Noel Daly, his wife and daughter drove to Scituate from Boston to join us. He gave us a detailed account of the history of the song “Dear Old Skibbereen” before giving us an emotional performance of it.
Afterwards, it was off to their canteen for lunch before we all headed off in the bus for a guided tour of Scituate Water Tower, The Mossing Museum, Scituate Light House and their 1916 monument.
Students were also formally introduced to Ms. Brenda O’ Connor who is now a legend in everyone’s eyes. There is no end to her dedication and contribution to this exchange and we are very thankful to her for everything she does for us.
The day ended with spectacular views of Scituate Harbour. There is no doubt that everyone enjoyed it all.
The Boston trip got off to a very exciting start. The bus was given a great send off by all the families who got up early to see off our students. We thank them sincerely for it.
At Shannon Airport, after our first group picture, we met a flight full of US Army personnel. They kindly gave us a few minutes to pose for photos.
At Logan Airport we were met with our ‘yellow bus’ where we were taken to Scituate High School. Our students met the host families bringing our day to a close. We got a great welcome from them. They made a huge effort with banners and balloons.
We are already looking forward to the next few days.
As part of History Week in the school, all Transition Year History students attended a talk from Mr. Philip O‘Regan.
He gave a fascinating talk about the history of Skibbereen town, from its late origins after the Sack of Baltimore to the devastating impact of the Famine and the role of the Civil War.
The class also learned other interesting facts, one of which was that Skibbereen was nearly renamed Ilentown!
A huge thank you to Mr Philip O’Regan, who generously gave his time and expertise and gave an excellent talk.

The school wishes to congratulate Aran O’Driscoll on his recent achievement of being the current Cork County Sea Angling champion.
He beat 79 other sea anglers in Baltimore recently to win this prestigious title.
He is pictured here with his friends and the school wishes him every success in the future.

Today we had a welcome visit from Bishop Buckley.
He visited all the 6th year class groups to wish them well in their Leaving Cert year and shared the story of Blessed Carlo Acutis with them.
We are very thankful to Bishop Buckley for the visit.
