Schools Athletics Tailteann Games, June 24th

Athletics Ireland Schools' Tailteann (Interprovincial) Games were held in Carlow on Saturday last, June 24th. This event is a historical one, with a long tradition and is for the Intermediate grade (u17) only. The top three athletes in each event, from the 4 provinces compete against each other for three medals. The top two athletes in each event are also be rewarded with international selection for the Schools Track and Field (SIAB),held annually.

The three SCS athletes who had qualified all performed tremendously, despite the strong wind that made running and throwing difficult for all.

Diana Coakley finished in 5th place with a best throw of  36.23m  in the hammer(3kg) competition. This was a PB and a superb throw especially considering she is eligible again next year.

Katie Kingston continued her impressive form in the Javelin (500g) competition. Katie's best on the day was a brilliant 39.15m  but unfortunately  just shy of the bronze medal on this occasion, finishing in a very creditable 4th place.

Caoimhe Flannery continued her unbeaten run this year by winning the 1500m Steeplechase title, in her second best time this year,5 :12.

Caoimhe has now been selected to represent Ireland in the Schools International Track and Field at Grangemouth, Scotland on July 15th, where she will run again athletes from England, Scotland and Wales.

Best of luck to our Leaving Certs and Junior Certs tomorrow!

  1. Read your Exam Timetable Carefully. Put a copy on the kitchen fridge.

  2. Be early for every exam, 30min at least before the first one.

  6. Wear your school uniform to keep you work focused.

  7. There are study spaces available in the school for you to study in.

  8. Make sure you have read the exam paper from cover to cover and double check you have completed all tasks before handing up your scripts.

  10. Stay until the end of every exam. Use your time wisely.

Best of luck!

Class 2D Present Life Jackets to Students in the LRC

In this heartwarming picture, we see the students of class 2D proudly presenting brand new lifejackets to their fellow students in the LRC (Learning Resource Centre).

The journey towards this special moment began when class 2D organised a Fairtrade Bakesale before Easter as part of their efforts to earn a fairtrade badge for our school. Through their hard work and dedication, they managed to raise an impressive sum of €137. However, instead of keeping the money for themselves, the compassionate students decided to donate it to a worthy cause. After much deliberation, they chose the LRC as the recipient of their donation, recognizing the need for essential equipment for various outdoor activities.

With the funds raised, the students of class 2D were able to purchase lifejackets for the LRC students. The presentation of these lifejackets was truly a moment of joy and celebration, highlighting the kindness and generosity that exists within our school community.

Thank you to Chamarine Safety services for the life jackets and thank you to Ms. Grace Callaghan and Ms. Carla Nugent for organising this event for the students.

Coeliac Awareness Week

A busy week in SCS marking many different important events from Coeliac Awareness Week to Bike Week to LGBTI Awareness Week.

All students in SCS are reminded to support our LGBTI friends and to prevent bullying.

It is very important to include coeliacs at every opportunity and all students are encouraged to promote fitness through cycling.

Many thanks to Ms. Grace Callaghan and Ms. Órla O’Sullivan for organising.

Economics FC vs. Chemistry United

6th Year Economists prevail in epic clash in SCS showdown.  Established in 2021, Economics FC finally lined out in their famous yellow and black on a sunny Monday afternoon.  A fine crowd of students welcomed both teams onto the school pitch for this lunchtime battle!

The Economics class had challenged the 6th year Chemistry class on Friday and the teams trained hard for a game bound for the history books.  In the end, Economics FC ran out 6-3 winners.

Goalscorers: Economics FC – Liam McCarthy (2), Byron O’Sullivan (2), Damien Fernandes (1), John Hurley (pen) Chemistry United – Conor Tobin, Colm Harrington and Paddy French (1).

A big thanks to Mr O’Shea who refereed the 1st half and to Liam Murray who refereed the 2nd half.

South Munster Schools Athletics

The final events of the South Munster Schools  Track and Field Championships were held at a sunny Mardyke on Saturday last.

Caoimhe Flannery (3rd Year) retained the Intermediate (u17) 1500m Steeplechase in style, breaking the South Munster record she set herself last year, by 6 seconds.

Dáire Bohane (1st year) competed well in the Junior 100m and Long jump.

With the first 3 qualifying in each event, Caoimhe will now proceed ,with Diana, Katie, Elaine and Lorraine to the Munster Schools Track and Field finals, in Castleisland.
