5th Year RE Retreat

Today, 5th year students had the opportunity to take a break from the classroom and headed to the scenic valley of Gougane Barra for our annual RE retreat. It was a day designed for them to reflect and connect, and the mix of spring air and stunning scenery did just that.

The day kicked off with a sense of peace as we gathered in the iconic St. Finbarr’s Oratory. In the quiet of the tiny lakeside chapel, we held a short reflection and lit a candle for our intentions.

Afterwards, we took some time to walk through the outdoor Stations of the Cross, appreciating the history and the stillness of the island.

Then, we headed into the forest park for a hike along the nature trails. We got to see the local wildlife, waterfalls and where the River Lee begins its journey. We stopped for lunch together alfresco in the middle of our walk before making our way back down along the trail.

The real value of the day was the chance to spend time together as a group outside of the school walls, so getting away from the books and into the fresh air was exactly what was needed. Whether students were chatting on the trails or just taking in the silence by the lake, it was a great chance to reconnect as a group before this school term comes to an end.

Young Environmentalist Awards

Today our TY students Jodie Anthony, Doireann Flannery, Éabha McCaffrey and Nicola Swanton represented SCS at the Semi-Finals of the Young Environmentalist Awards at Cork Waterworks.

The girls presented their project on food waste and the MyGug anaerobic digester: “Using food to produce food”.  The project involved lots of collaboration from multiple depts such as Sustainability, Home Ec, Woodcraft and Science.

They pitched their project to a panel of 4 judges. Their pitch lasted 7 minutes before a round of questions from the judges. They now have to wait a month before hearing if they have made it through to the final round in Dublin. Best of luck girls!

Afterwards, we went to the Glucksman Gallery in UCC for a quick visit to the dinosaur exhibit.

Young Environmentalist Awards

Ahead of tomorrow's Young Environmentalist Award Eco-Dens, our TY students Éabha McCaffrey, Doireann Flannery, Nicola Swanton and Jodie Anthony have prepared a diagram of the bioeconomy that they have created with the help of the school's MyGug.

TY Students Attend Inspiring Careers Talk at Ludgate Hub for International Women’s Day

To mark International Women’s Day, students attended an inspiring careers talk at the Ludgate Hub, where a panel of accomplished women shared their personal career journeys and experiences across a range of industries.

The speakers provided valuable insight into what it truly takes to build a successful and fulfilling career. Key themes included resilience, adaptability, teamwork and hard work, with honest reflections on overcoming setbacks and embracing opportunities for growth. One quote that particularly resonated with students was:

“Hard‑working people are luckier.”

The session encouraged students to reflect on their own strengths and ambitions, while highlighting the importance of perseverance, collaboration and continuous learning. It was an engaging and motivating event that showcased strong female role models and left students with practical advice they can carry forward into their future careers.
