6th year Agricultural Science students visited Macroom Buffalo Farm today. Macroom Buffalo has Ireland's first and largest herd of free roaming, grass fed Water Buffalo.
We got a fantastic tour of the farm, led by the passionate and informative guide, Dorothy O' Tuama. She shared insights into the history of water buffalo farming in Ireland and how in 2009, they took the plunge and imported 31 buffalo from Northern Italy and now have over 700!
Students enjoyed meeting the friendly calves and docile mothers as well as learning about animal husbandry, cheese making and sustainability.
The trip concluded with a tasting session featuring fresh mozzarella, ricotta, burrata, Cypriot grilling cheese and even some buffalo burgers. The rich, creamy flavours of the cheese were a testament to the farm's dedication to quality.
To top it all off, Mr. Shanahan put his culinary skills to the test and whipped up a delicious ricotta lemon curd cheesecake which was a hit with everyone!
Thanks for a fantastic day out.
TY students enjoyed a visit to CUH today, to learn about a wide range of Healthcare and Social Care professions.
They had the opportunity to hear about the working lives of a wide range of professionals including a Physiotherapist, a Radiographer, a Biomedical Engineer an Occupational Therapist as well as many more. They also got to chat and ask questions to students currently studying in the HSCP area.
Huge thanks to CUH for inviting SCS to take part in this event.
6th year Agricultural Science students pictured with Darren Lynch, Dr. Lorna Twomey, and David Shields at the Drinagh Agricultural Workshop in the West Cork Hotel today.
A huge thank you to Drinagh for inviting us to attend the workshop. A very informative and interactive afternoon with students benefiting from a variety of stalls which included animal nutrition, milk quality, grass measuring, silage production, farm safety as well as herd health and breeding advice.
At our recent Open Evening, TY Food & Hospitality students presented the prototypes of their Artisan Food Products which they have been working on all term. Well done on some fantastic work thus far - some really exciting and innovative products on display. Products ranged from Bagels, Natural Chewing Gum and Banana Bread to name but a few.
To celebrate their hard work, the next day students headed to Cork where the first stop was Páirc Uí Chaoimh for ice skating and then on to Marina Market for lunch.
On route home students stopped off at Macroom Buffalo Mozarella Farm, where Dorothy O’Tuama gave a superb guided tour of the farm and tasting of the products produced on the farm. The highlight was getting up close with the baby buffalo and tasting the buffalo burgers.
A very enjoyable day out!

Over the last few weeks, all first year students have attended the Heritage Centre with their History teachers. These trips have been extremely informative as they received great talks from Terri about the impact of the Famine on Skibbereen and its surrounding area. There are great sources from the time period at the centre and it brought the experience to life for students.
Out thanks to Terri and everyone at the Heritage Centre for making this such a great experience . A big thanks to the History department for organising these trips.
