On Thursday, Green Schools Committee members along with TY History and Sustainability students and their teachers, Ms O’Brien and Ms. Burke, visited Skibbereen Heritage Centre and Lough Hyne.
TY students organised the trip as they were keen to learn why Lough Hyne was Europe’s first designated marine reserve and why it is the most studied body of water of its size in the world! Recent media coverage has brought our attention to Lough Hyne as a rich but also fragile ecosystem which needs to be protected. Skibbereen Heritage Centre has a fascinating Lough Hyne section as well as an extensive Famine Exhibition.
Ms. Terri Kearney warmly welcomed us at the Heritage Centre and gave us an incredibly interesting and engaging tour. Students learned about the researchers and the various habitats in Lough Hyne such as the Rapids, Whirlpool Cliff, the Western Trough and Barloge Creek. Ms Kearney brought history alive when describing the causes and devastating effects of the famine in our local area. It was interesting to note the crucial role that policy played in food distribution and how this is still very relevant in the world today.
From the Heritage Centre we travelled to Lough Hyne to enjoy its beauty for ourselves, and we picnicked and hiked to Barloge Creek. We also met Mr. Rory Jackson who runs the Oceans Plastic Project and facilitates the Cycle Sense bike upcycling project. Students are keen to participate in both of these initiatives in the future.
On Monday 20 November, Ireland’s two United Nations Youth Delegates, Alicia O’Sullivan and Mohammad Naeem came to SCS to talk to students about their role in the United Nations, the Sustainable Development Goals and many other social and climate issues.
TY, Fifth Year and Green Schools Committee students attended. Alicia and Mohammad were very open and answered all the questions the students had. They also gave a presentation on their trip to New York City where they spoke to the UN General Assembly about issues concerning young people.
Alicia is a past pupil of SCS and we really enjoyed welcoming her back to her old school!
Thanks to Ms Burke, Ms McNulty & Mr Uhl for organising the event and especially to Mohammad and Alicia for taking the time to come and talk to us.
A huge congratulations to Caoimhe Flannery in 4th year on winning a West Cork Sports Star Award for her amazing achievements to date in Athletics.
A lovely celebration was had by all on Tuesday evening in The Celtic Ross Hotel, sponsors of the event, along with Cork 103 and The Southern Star.
There was lots of support for Caoimhe on the evening with her family, neighbours, several of her SCS school pals, Ms. Belton DP SCS and many more in attendance.
Congrats again Caoimhe from everyone in SCS. We are so proud of you and wish you the very best with all your future endeavours. Well done!
Three students from Transition Year are currently working on their BT Young Scientist and Technology project that explores the digital experience of older adults.
This study aims to analyse how our elderly generation struggles daily in the digital world thus disconnecting them from our generation.
The aim of the project is to highlight and understand the digital disconnect that currently exists between the older and younger generations.
They would greatly appreciate it if people over 60 years of age would please complete the short survey below as part of their research.
There will also be paper survey copies in the front office if any students want to collect some for their older relatives and friends to fill out.
Digital Drop-In Workshop 4
Thursday, 16 November, 2023
There was lots of activity at this week’s Digital Drop-In workshop with a total of 12 participants, evenly distributed across volunteer TY mentors and learners, two of whom dropped in for the first time this week.
Two participants supported by their mentors joined our WhatsApp community where learnings and tips are shared between workshops. One participant placed an advert on DoneDeal to sell a bicycle and a second is well on the way to advertising another bicycle once we figure out what’s going on with the photo upload issue. In addition to bicycles being advertised for sale there was some interest in wheeling and dealing of the four wheel variety as well! It also transpires that following our BorrowBox focus last week one of our participants can now teach us all a thing or two about borrowing and reserving physical books from the library. This should not be any surprise, after all, we are Learning. Digital. Together.
Tip of the workshop: Don’t ever feel pressured into making a decision about an online transaction you’re not sure about. Take your time, do your research, perhaps ask for advice, and then make your decision.
Thanks to Mr Conor Uhl and Ms Orla O’Sullivan for organising.
Some of the 2nd years finished the end of Science Week with an ice cream treat.
Despite the terribly wet day, students were enthusiastic to get stuck in making and tasting.
Science Week took senior students to the polytunnel to test soil and sow bulbs.

Pictured below is a Steam Engine showing Energy Transfer.
1st years keenly contested the first year Science Quiz during Science Week. Lots of discussion and fun was had on route to the last round.
4th and 5th year students had to crack the code using their knowledge of the Digestive System. Once the code was cracked it allowed them to get out of the Lab!
