Digital Drop In Workshop 2

Digital Drop-In workshop 2 took place on Thursday, 12th October with a total of 10 willing learners and mentors participating.

A presentation on the topic of online and telephone scams was researched and delivered by mentors who facilitated an excellent sharing of experiences of falling prey to such scams. It turns out that this happens to younger and older generations so the key message for us all is to be constantly vigilant.

An informal workshop followed, facilitated by Dr Sandra Flynn, whose PhD research focused on intergenerational and peer learning, resulting in this Digital Drop-In pilot project, that uses a ‘learner-led’ approach rather than the more popular ‘instructor-led’ approach to digital skills development. Content and learnings shared at both workshops will be transferred to a series of process steps for the learners to refer to as required in the future.

Tip of the workshop: Instead of purchasing books to read online, why not avail of the free BorrowBox facility from your local public library? This feature will be researched and presented to our participants at a future workshop.

Many thanks to Mr Anton O’Mahony for the school’s participation and graciously hosting the workshops. Thanks also to Mr Conor Uhl and Ms Orla O’Sullivan for organising.

During your daughter/son’s journey through Junior Cycle, you will be aware of their achievements in their Classroom Based Assessments (CBAs), and Other Areas of Learning (OALs). They will also be receiving their Junior Cycle state examination results. The JCPA will contain a record of each of these areas of achievement.

We are delighted to invite you to a school celebration of this wonderful achievement commencing at 12.40pm. We kindly request that you take your seats by 12.30pm. Light refreshments will be served after the presentation. We anticipate the event will take approximately an hour or so.

We are very much looking forward to this special occasion and to celebrate your daughter/son’s success with you. Thank you for your continued support.

Every good wish,

First Year Art Competition

To celebrate World Languages and Culture Week, all first year students were invited to enter an art competition. The brief was to include one of the following slogans: “Everyone smiles in the same language”, “Unity in Diversity” OR to create a poster highlighting the languages spoken by their classmates.

The posters revealed the extraordinary wealth of languages spoken within our school community. We were delighted to receive a high number of entries and it was very difficult to select the winning posters.  You can view the winning entries along with a number of the close contenders here!

Prizes were awarded to Zuzana Pylak, Ignatas Grebenscikkov, Mia Crowley, Marysias Stromecka and Aaron Deasy. The students were commended for their work and presented with their vouchers for Cathal O'Donovan's Bookshop by Mr Ó Donnabháin on Tuesday.

We would like to thank all first students who submitted entries. Your creativity is very much appreciated and your artwork has brightened up the hallways of Skibbereen Community School. Great job!

L.R.C. Students Shine Bright in Skibbereen Carbery Show 2023

Skibbereen's Carbery Show 2023 celebrate young and young-at-heart artists of all abilities.

This years show saw a bumper amount of entries in all art & craft categories, with our own L.R.C. Students entering 7 classes and submitting 60 items.

Competition was stiff and  judges had a difficult task selecting winners from such a stellar line-up of entries.

Artistic practise supports creativity, originality and self-expression within our young adults, and this is clearly evident in their exhibits.

-Laura Daly 3rd Year   - Winning 1st prize  in the Still Life Category (Acrylic)

- Arron O'Donovan 3rd Year -  Winning 2nd prize in Landscape Category (Gouache)

-Brian O'Shea  4th year - Winning 3rd prize in Drawing Category (Mixed Media) Van Gogh Inspired

-Jack Leahy 2nd Year - Highly Commended in Drawing Category (Gouache) Cubism Inspired

A huge thanks to Susan O'Regan their art teacher for all her inspiration and  steadfast patience.

Lets make our 2024 entries even greater!

TY Students Complete FAI Level 1 Coaching Badge

23 TY students today completed their FAI level one coaching badge.

During the day they learned how to structure and plan a session and above all developed skills in managing people and planning within a team of coaches. These are key skill needed in many areas, both in the working world and on the pitch.
