Launch of the new Family of Parishes Crest, April 22nd.

A huge thank you to Fr Terry O Brien for visiting the 5C RE class this morning to present them with the New Family of Parishes Logo. They were delighted with their pizza and goodies!  Fr Terry O Brien worked with the 5C class in helping creating the new logo for The Family of Parishes, that was unveiled in St Patrick's Cathedral this Easter. Special mention to Luca Harte, Stephen Kearney & Ferdia McAleavy who came up with the winning logo. We are very proud of their efforts and will hang this plaque with pride in our meditation room. 

Blitz Bonanza for our First Year Girls and U14 Boys in the County Blitz Championships, April 20th

Our First Year Girls Football Teams and our U14 boys Football Teams had great success in their respective County Blitz Championships in Cork yesterday, April 20th. One of the Girls Teams won their respective section and the other team were runners up. This LGFA tournament was held in Ballincollig. The U14 Boys Football Teams won their respective sections in Nemo Rangers. Congrats to all involved and many thanks to the coaches Ms. Anna Ward, Mr. Maurice Moore ,Mr. Eoghan Daly and Mr. Chris O Brien.

TY French Students Visit 'Le Musée Du Louvre'

Green Schools Flag 2023 Win, April 19th.

Congratulations to all the Students and Staff involved in the Green School Committee who have just won An Taisce’s Green Schools Flag for 2023. This was a recognition award for all the work they have done with waste management, water saving and Climate Change Action in our school building.

Safe Pass Course, April 18th.

Gold Medal Pope John Paul 2nd Awards

On Sunday past and present students, Ciara, Rachel, Molly, Megan & Casey  received Gold Medal John Paul II Awards for their contribution to the local faith community. These students are the first in our diocese to receive such awards. Bishop Fintan Gavin was delighted to present them with their awards and we here in SCS are very proud of their achievement! Well done! 

Many thanks to local women Jacinta Crowley, Dolores Ruane and Teresa Shannon for their work on helping getting these students their awards. We look forward to being part of the John Paul II awards again in the future.

4th Years at Cara House

Skibbereen & District Chamber of Commerce First Year Presentation.

We were very proud of our 14 first years who received a presentation of an Easter Egg today from Ms. Helen Dempsey and Mr. Michael Deasy from the Skibbereen and District Chamber of Commerce at their First Year Assembly for volunteering their services for face painting at the recent. St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Skibbereen.

The face painting was a huge success and gave great joy to all of the children at the parade.

At the presentation, our Principal spoke about how how proud the school was of these students and the importance of helping out our local community in Skibbereen and the surrounding areas at every opportunity. Volunteer work is very important.

Ms. Olivia Hoskins, Kayla Holmes and Ailbhe Quinn were also presented with Easter Eggs for their help with the Christmas Crib.

Class 2D Fairtrade Cake Sale

Class 2D held a Fairtrade cake sale this week where they raised €132 for a Charity they will chose to donate to after Easter.

2D are currently trying to receive a Fairtrade badge for the school and this Fairtrade cake sale was a step they needed to take to achieve this. It has also promoted awareness to lots of other students and staff members.

Thanks to teachers Ms. O’Callaghan and Mr. Mannion for helping to organise this for the students.

TY Students Visit Awesome Walls

TY students visited Awesome Walls in Cork today for their activity day.

A great group, all of whom displayed fantastic agility and no fear of heights.

Next stop: “The Dawn Wall”.

4th Years Cycle & Walk the Waterford Greenway

83 staff and students cycled and walked The Waterford Greenway today. It was the biggest number to date who completed this trip, making it a massive success.

The cyclists completed 46 km, stopping in Waterford for the bikes, Kilmeaden for ice cream, Kilmacthomas for lunch, Durrow and Dungarvan.

The walkers who were led by Ms. Carla Nugent and Ms. Siobhan O’Donoghue walked from Kilmacthomas to Durrow.

Skibbereen Community School offers a lot of sports but is also proud of being a big cycling and walking hub.

History Trip to Michael Collins Centre, Béal na Bláth & Kilmichael Ambush

A group of students and their teachers had a recent visit to historical sites in West Cork. 

The tour started with a visit to the Michael Collins Museum following by a trip to Béal na Bláth. They then visited the ambush site at Kilmichael. 

The group got an informative tour from each of the sites from historian Tim Crowley.

4th Years Participate in a "Walkability Audit"

Today our 4th Years were involved in a “Walkability Audit”.

Students were auditors of selected routes across Skibbereen town using a Universal Toolkit from NTA. Findings will be compiled in a report to be shared with relevant stakeholders including Cork County Council.

Talk to TY Students by Dr. Karen Weekes, Atlantic Solo Rower, March 28th.

Skibbereen Community School welcomed Dr. Karen Weekes to give a talk on resilience, goal setting and positive mindset.

She gave a fascinating lecture on her Atlantic Solo Rowing voyage last year to all TY students and members of Skibb Rowing Club. She also gave plenty of mindfulness tips. What an inspirational person to have talk to our students.
