4th Years Cycle & Walk the Waterford Greenway

83 staff and students cycled and walked The Waterford Greenway today. It was the biggest number to date who completed this trip, making it a massive success.

The cyclists completed 46 km, stopping in Waterford for the bikes, Kilmeaden for ice cream, Kilmacthomas for lunch, Durrow and Dungarvan.

The walkers who were led by Ms. Carla Nugent and Ms. Siobhan O’Donoghue walked from Kilmacthomas to Durrow.

Skibbereen Community School offers a lot of sports but is also proud of being a big cycling and walking hub.

Thanks to Ms. Órla O’Sullivan, Ms. Karen Sheane, Mr. Cormac O’Brien, Ms. Carla Nugent, Mr. Chris O’Brien, Ms. Shirley Wycherly and Ms. Siobhan Dempsey for accompanying and Mr. Conor Uhl and Ms. Gretta Burchill for organising. History Trip to Michael Collins Centre, Béal na Bláth & Kilmichael Ambush

A group of students and their teachers had a recent visit to historical sites in West Cork. 

The tour started with a visit to the Michael Collins Museum following by a trip to Béal na Bláth. They then visited the ambush site at Kilmichael. 

The group got an informative tour from each of the sites from historian Tim Crowley.

4th Years Participate in a "Walkability Audit"

Today our 4th Years were involved in a “Walkability Audit”.

Students were auditors of selected routes across Skibbereen town using a Universal Toolkit from NTA. Findings will be compiled in a report to be shared with relevant stakeholders including Cork County Council.

Talk to TY Students by Dr. Karen Weekes, Atlantic Solo Rower, March 28th.

Skibbereen Community School welcomed Dr. Karen Weekes to give a talk on resilience, goal setting and positive mindset.

She gave a fascinating lecture on her Atlantic Solo Rowing voyage last year to all TY students and members of Skibb Rowing Club. She also gave plenty of mindfulness tips. What an inspirational person to have talk to our students.

Farming Club Trip to Atkins Farm Machinery Yard Cork, March 28th

The Farming Club had a day out in Atkins Farm Centre today in Cork. They were shown around the machinery yard and the service centre. Many thanks to Mr. Mossie Galvin and the Atkins team for their time and information. Many thanks also to Mr. Peter Swanton and Mr. Stephen Mannion for accompanying the lads and organising the trip.

Hard luck to our Junior Ladies Soccer Team in the Cup, March 24th

Hard luck to our Junior Ladies Soccer Team and their coaches Ms. Orla Higgins and Mr. Ger Carey who were knocked out of the Cup by Ballincollig last Friday. They put in a stellar performance but fell short on the day. Well done to all involved.

Ricky Barrett Memorial Tractor Run, March 26th.

The School Community were delighted to support last Sunday’s Memorial Tractor Run in aid of Ricky’s chosen charities. Over 350 tractors took part where they departed from the Mart Yard. Many thanks to those students and staff who drove in the convoy, acted as stewards or provided refreshments. Ricky’s family were extremely grateful for all the support.

West Cork Campus Open Day

Looking forward to visiting our neighbours, West Cork Campus on Thursday 30th March to learn more about the great Further Education opportunities that exist in our locality. 

4th Years at Cara House

4th years are delighted to be helping out in Cara House on Fridays.

We are very proud of their hard work and as you can see from the pictures, they are keeping the residents very happy.

4th Years Attend 'Fáilte Isteach' Presentation

Pictured here are our 4th years attending a presentation course with Ms. Donna Treya called ‘Fáilte Isteach’ with the West Cork Development Partnership.

It was a wonderful presentation on developing language.

It is hoped that going forward we will assist the Ukrainians in learning the English language.

1st Year Boys Basketball Team are County Champions

Congratulations to our first year boys basketball team & to their coach Ms. Marie O’Mahony on being crowned County Champions in the ‘A’ league today.

This makes them the top team in the county and are now through to the All Ireland series.

Well done to all!

5th Year Ecology Field Trip

5th Year Biology students went on an Ecology Field Trip to Fota Wildlife Park on Thursday March 16th. The students carried out a habitat study looking at both the biotic and abiotic factors that influenced the organisms present in it.

Despite the early start and not so pleasant weather students and teachers really enjoyed the day.

100 New Books For the School Library, March 22nd.

The School Library has added a 100 new books to its shelves today. Many thanks to Ms. Evelyn Collins and her team of students for cataloguing all the books and organising the daily loan system. The Library is open to all students during every lunch time.

Huge Success for our TY Musical Cast and Crew at the All-Ireland Schools Drama Comp, March 20th

Congratulations to the cast, crew and school staff of our TY Musical, “Hi-School Musical” on finishing 4th in the All-Ireland Light TY Drama School’s Competition last night in the Everyman theatre, Cork. This was a huge achievement for our school especially after the Musical sold out all three shows in Skibbereen last week. Over 1200 people have seen the show to date. We would like to acknowledge all the hard work put in by the students and school staff which are listed below. Many thanks to them and to our generous local sponsors.

Farewell to our Boston Exchange Students & Teachers

We were saddened to say goodbye to our Boston Exchange students and teachers, after a fabulous 10 days in Ireland.

The exchange has been an incredible success and has left us all with incredible memories. It has been said that “as one journey ends, another begins”. It is so true, as the countdown has already started for the return journey in October.

Skibbereen St. Patrick's Day Parade

We were honoured in Skibbereen Community School to be the ‘Grand Marshals’ in the Skibbereen St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

It was a huge privilege to have our Boston Exchange students walk with us as we led the parade. A huge thank you to Skibbereen and District Chamber of Commerce for all of their hard work organising such a special event.

First Years Volunteer to Face Paint at St. Patrick's Day Parade
