Reminder: First Year Parent/Teacher Meeting, Thurs March 30th, 4.15pm to 6.30pm.
5th Year Biology students went on an Ecology Field Trip to Fota Wildlife Park on Thursday March 16th. The students carried out a habitat study looking at both the biotic and abiotic factors that influenced the organisms present in it.
Despite the early start and not so pleasant weather students and teachers really enjoyed the day.
We were saddened to say goodbye to our Boston Exchange students and teachers, after a fabulous 10 days in Ireland.
The exchange has been an incredible success and has left us all with incredible memories. It has been said that “as one journey ends, another begins”. It is so true, as the countdown has already started for the return journey in October.
Pictured below is Mr. Anton O’Mahony, Ms. Órla O’Sullivan and Mr. Cormac O’Brien wishing them well as they prepared for their journey home to Boston.
We wish to thank our wonderful visitors for coming and to Liz and Dave Grindle and Siobhan Hunter and Christine Walsh for accompanying them. A big thank you to Rita O’Connell and Ruth O’Brien for their help. Thanks also to Ms. Orla O’Sullivan Mr. Cormac O’Brien, Ms. Colette Brennan and Mr. Conor Murphy for helping to organise the exchange.
We were honoured in Skibbereen Community School to be the ‘Grand Marshals’ in the Skibbereen St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
It was a huge privilege to have our Boston Exchange students walk with us as we led the parade. A huge thank you to Skibbereen and District Chamber of Commerce for all of their hard work organising such a special event.
Many thanks to our staff members for organising and to our Boston exchange teachers Liz and Dave Grindle, Christine Walsh and Siobhan Hunter for accompanying their students.
We were delighted to be asked by Ms. Helen Dempsey and The Skibbereen and District Chamber of Commerce to organise face painting for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Skibbereen.
Thanks to our wonderful First Years who volunteered.
Good luck to our cast and crew of "Hi School Musical" and their teachers Ms Leiber, Ms. Brennan and Ms. Hoskins and SNA Ms. Pauline O’Callaghan who are competing in the All Ireland TY Light entertainment final today in the Everyman in Cork
We were delighted to invite our Boston exchange teachers Liz and Dave Grindle into class 1D today.
They were made to feel very welcome by all the students.
An interesting discussion followed about the differences between American and Irish schools. We learned that we have many things in common.
We wish to thank Liz and Dave for coming into the class. Many students in the class expressed an interest in participating in this exchange in the future.
Class 2D were visited by Kay Quinn, one of the members of Skibbereen Fairtrade Town who gave them a talk on the importance of Fairtrade and her experience in Costa Rica working with Fairtrade farmers. She also gave the students useful advice on how they can help our school get a Fairtrade badge.
Class 2D are currently trying to get a Fairtrade badge for our school in order to show how our school contributes to making the world a better place.
A Big thanks to Kay for visiting the students. It was very informative and very much appreciated.
Thanks to Ms. G. O’Callaghan and Mr. S. Mannion for organising this talk for the students.
Day 5 was again another action packed day.
It started out with a trip to Lough Hyne on Long’s coaches with Mr. Sean Hurley. Mr. Tom Foley gave a speech about Lough Hyne and gave a guided tour up the hill where they were met with panoramic views of West Cork. Ms. Alise Bride acted as another tour guide for an alternative route along the lake.
It was off to Baltimore next where they had lunch. Some had toasted specials in Bushe’s Bar in Baltimore whilst others opted for ice cream after a packed lunch.
After lunch they travelled to Liss Ard for a guided tour of the Irish Sky Gardens, by Paul Carlos.
Skibbereen Community School are very appreciative of Liss Ard and their manager Alexi Argyris for organising this special event. The smiles in the pictures say it all!

The library also provides a space to conduct research, print project work etc. Students were shown how to borrow and return books and learned how to request and reserve titles from other branches. Books can be borrowed from and returned to any branch nationally.
Members can also access ebooks and audio books free of charge. It is possible to read daily newspapers and magazines for free, send documents for printing remotely, book a PC, borrow or return a book in any library in the country, access language learning programmes and much, much more! In fact, you can even borrow a musical instrument from your local library!
Many thanks to Mary, Veronica and Gina in Skibbereen Library, and to teachers, Ms O’ Sullivan and Ms Burke for facilitating the visit.
