SCS Sailing Club (orange striped sails) taking part in their second inter-school team race league day, on Saturday 10th, at Schull. It was a very enjoyable day for all our participating sailors, who ranged in age and experience from first year to fourth year. The team is now looking forward to some training days planned for the new year, in preparation for the Munster Schools event in March.
This week some first year groups were busy putting together Team Hope Shoe Boxes for the Shoe box Appeal.
Team Hope is an Irish Christian development aid charity working with children and their families mainly across Eastern Europe, former Soviet Union and Africa.
A big thank you to the first years for all of their efforts and donations and thank you to the chaplain and RE Department for facilitating it.
SCS hosted its first “Hackathon” event in conjunction with the local Lions Club, Spearline technologies and the Ludgate Group. The event involves using technology and Blue Sky Thinking to reconfigure existing business models. West Cork Eggs kindly offered their business system as a guinea pig. All TY students were divided into creativity hubs and were asked to use technology to improve local business models. Four Teams were chosen by a panel of judges to make their presentations to the general public at the AgriTech Conference on the 22nd of November. Many thanks to Lions Club members, Mr. Oliver O Farrell, Mr. William Kingston, Mr. Don Davis, Mr. Ciaran Dillane and Ms. Tracy Daly. Sincere thanks to Mr. Kevin Buckley from Spearline, Ms. Adrienne Harrington from Ludgate, Mr. Harry McCann from the Digital Youth Council and Ms. Caroline Murphy from West Cork Eggs. Many thanks also to all the TY students involved, our visiting TY students from Mount St. Michael, Rosscarbery and to Ms. Gretta Burchill our TY Coordinator for organising.
First match girls lost 5-1 to sacred heart Westport who eventually got to the final. They then beat Maghene college Armagh 4-2 and Gorey community school (cup holders) 3-2 in a thriller to reach the plate semifinal. Here they lost 2-1 to Enniskillen royal grammar in a hard fought encounter. A fantastic performance by all the girls both on and off the field. The school is well proud of them. Many thanks to coach Mr. Sana Govender, Mark Salter Townsend for organizing, Ms. Rosie O Brien, School Chaplin for traveling and the many Parent Supporters. Thanks also to Ms. Eimear Hogan, Skibb RFC school liaison. Great day for SCS and Skibb RFC.
Congrats to the Senior Ladies Football Team and their coaches, Mr. Patrick Hayes and Mr. Tony Harrington on their win today over Carrigaline Community School. Their next and final round robin game in this Munster Championship is against Kinsale.
3C and 3E, SPHE Communication module - what better way to communicate than with a cup of tea and a biscuit and also a great way to promote positive metal health over tea and a chat and a nice way to end our first term of school. Thanks to the SEN Dept for the use of the LRC social area and especially to Eilish Hurley, SNA for her help.
As we begin our new term back in SCS, students and staff are invited to write the name of their loved ones that they wish to remember for the month of November.
All those names will be especially prayed for and remembered during our class prayer services throughout the month.
The book can be found in the sacred space of the RE corridor.
Today Robert Field an addiction counsellor for the HSE spoke to 5th year students on the topic of addiction. His presentation was insightful and gave students a better understanding of addiction and the services available.
A big thank you to the chaplain Ms. O’Brien and the RE department for organising.
The School Community wishes everyone a Happy Halloween and hope they enjoy the mid-term. Thanks to the Art Department for making these amazing Spooky Horrors which are on display in Leap at the “Scarecrow Festival”.
