On Saturday afternoon last, Jan 27th, nearly 100 young people aged between 15-30 from youth groups across Ireland gathered in Dublin to discuss the key issues affecting Irish youth today. The Young Voices consultation, organised by the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI), brought together spokespeople on issues such as education, access to work, advancements in technology, LGBT rights, rural isolation, gender equality, mental health and disability rights to exchange ideas ahead of the EU Youth Conference in SofiaBulgaria. The School Community would like to commend Brigid O Sullivan, 5th Year and Saoirse O Connor, 3rd Year on their involvement with the Council.

Highest Leaving Cert Business Result in Ireland

Congratulations to Darren Seymour, Leaving Cert 2017 and his Business Teacher, Mr. Donal Murphy on their awards from the Banking and Payments Federation of Ireland and the Business Studies Teachers' Association of Ireland. Darren got the highest Business Studies result in Ireland in last year's Leaving Cert. The School Community are extremely proud of Darren and Mr. Murphy's achievements and we wish Darren the very best of luck with his studies.

U14 Girls BB Team narrowly lose to Carrigaline, Jan 30th.

Hard luck to the U14 Girls Basketball Team and their coaches, Ms.Marie O Mahony and Ms. Kathleen Lynch who lost to Carrigaline Community School by just one basket. The final score in this county League Match was 37 point to 35.

SCHOOL BANK NOW OPEN

The School Bank was officially opened today by Ms.Breege Corkery, 11 time All-Ireland Football  and 6 time All-Ireland Camogie winner for Cork. She is pictured with Mr. Euan O Donovan, School Bank Manager and his team with Ms. Ella Ryan, Business Teacher.

School bank opens for business on the 20th of February. First 100 accounts opened will get Munster rugby tickets or Republic of Ireland soccer tickets. They will also get a free slice of pizza. Students can claim a visa debit card, If you are over the age of 14, allowing you to shop online.

The School was delighted to welcome past pupils, Timmy O Donovan and Eoin Quinn who are both studying Marine Engineering and Nautical Engineering respectively at the Marine College in Haulbowline. Both gave a great talk to some of our current leaving certs and both have obtained contracts when they graduate. We wish them both well and thanks to Ms. Cliodhna O Sullivan, Career Guidance Department for organising.

U16 Footballers in action.

The U16 Football panel played a cracker of a challenge match against De La Salle Macroom last Friday. The final score was SCS 16 points to De La Salle Macroom 1-6. The team play Colaiste Choilm tomorrow in the first round of the Munster Championship.

VEX Robotic Competition

On Friday the 19th of January Transition year students took part in the VEX Robotic Competition in CIT. The students did extremely well reaching the quarter final stage of the competition.

Team members included: Cailum Hodnett-Kelleher, David Melero, Adam Ladziak, Jack Lowney, James Murphy, Stephen O'Donovan, Gearoid O'Driscoll, Seins Vizulins, Fionn Whooley & Micheal Veale. Well done to all.

"Open Night", January 18th 2018.

The School was on show last night to 6th Class Students and their parents. A huge crowd turned out on a wet evening. Each subject department showcased their wares with demonstrations and displays. The Principal, Mr. Anton O Mahony addressed the crowd and gave the reasons why Skibbereen Community School may be a good fit for their son or daughter. We would like to thank all our students and staff who helped promote us last night. Students provided music, tours and gave presentations at the various stands. We would like to thank the Parents Council who organised the refreshments. Thanks also to Drinagh Co-op for their sponsorship.  Well done to all involved!

4th Year Film "Drunken Day"

Well done to class 4C, who made a film recently in school called ‘A Drunken Day in Skibbereen’. In the film, Nicholas sells drink to Paddy. Mark takes one bottle off Paddy but when Mark tries to take a second bottle off Paddy, he gets angry and hits Mark. Mark falls down the stairs and dies.

Best of luck to the class as they enter the competition run by drugs.ie, the National Youth Media Awards, where they clearly showed the fatal effects of alcohol on young people.

Thank you to; Adam Ladziak for filming it, Jordan Limrick for directing it, Abbie Salter-Townshend assistant director, Mark Cotter, Paddy Kenna, Nicholas O’Donovan, Michael Veale, Dylan Murray, Katelyn Hurley, Poppy Colligan and Nicola O’Reilly for acting. Particular mention to Darren Daly and Shane Cotter who were script writers and Oran Collins who organised the props.

"Open Day" for 6th Class Students, Jan 18th

The School Community were delighted to welcome all our visiting 6th class students from our neighbouring national schools. The students were given guided tours by our Mentoring Team of 4th and 5th Years. Our current first years were delighted to see old familiar faces and were also delighted to showcase our school. The 6th Class students were given class demonstrations in the various subject departments such as Art, Home Ec, Maths, Wood, Metal, PE to name but a few. 

Lunches were provided in the canteen area where they also sampled the home baking that they helped prepare. Mr. O Mahony, Principal said a few words before everyone departed for their bus. Many thanks to all Students and Staff who made our visitors fell most welcome. 

4th Year Film "Bronemies"

Well done to class 4A for their film that was made today called “Bronemies”. It shows two siblings who were given out to by their parents for their drunken behaviour. The two siblings were involved in several altercations with their friends in school and ended up falling out with everyone.

First Year Friendship Activities

Our first years have been taking part in various friendship activities to help them to get to know each other and settle into school. Fun classes were had by all, where 'getting to know you' activities were organised. Well done to all. A huge thank you to Ms. Orla O’Sullivan, Ms. Ni Mhuirthile, Ms. Caroline O’Donovan and Ms. Shirley Wycherley  for organising it.

Sign Language Workshops

Our second years participated in sign language workshops with Ms. Kate Cooke as part of SPHE. A huge thank you to Kate for doing this in Ms. Orla O’Sullivan's classes.

4th Year Home Economics

Transition year students were very busy in the Home Economics room on Thursday morning, preparing these mouth watering dishes. The winners will represent the school in the apprentice chef competition. Well done to all involved, and the very best of luck! 

3rd Years Visit Historical Famine Graveyard

Our third years recently visited the historical famine graveyard in Chapel Lane as part of their Religious Education classes. Conor O’Neill organised the prayers. All students prayed a decade of the rosary for all those who are buried there and for all those who died belonging to them.

We are very fortunate that the school is located neat such a beautiful and significant graveyard. Interestingly, most of the students had never seen the graveyard. They are looking forward to doing it again. Well done to Ms. Deirdre Hennigan and Ms. O’Sullivan for organising.

St. Vincent de Paul & Simon Community

The school wishes to say a huge thank you to all those who contributed to our annual St. Vincent de Paul and Simon community appeals. Every contribution goes to very worthy causes, locally and nationally. A huge thank you to our Religion department for organising and promoting the appeals in our school.

4th Year Workshop on Inequality, Trade & Justice

The Fourth years attended an excellent workshop today facilitated by Ms. Sheila Gilbert, on inequality, justice and trade. Thanks to Ms. Orla O’Sullivan for organising.

Young Scientist Exhibition

The School Community would like to wish our Young Scientists and their mentor, Ms.Mags Breen the very best of luck in the Young Scientist Exhibition in Dublin.

Their project is a genetic one based on a Family Study of Factor 5 Leiden Mutation.
