We were delighted to recently welcome past pupil Ellen Hurley back to the school, alongside John Chapman from Farm Relief Services (FRS), to speak with our Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science students.
Ellen, who has recently taken up the role of Succession Officer with Carbery, spoke to students about her journey since leaving school and her career within the agricultural sector. She provided a valuable insight into farm succession and the importance of planning for the future of family farms, while also highlighting the wide range of career opportunities available within Irish agriculture.
The visit was particularly timely as 2026 marks the International Year of the Woman Farmer, celebrating and recognising the vital contribution women make to agriculture and food production. Her visit provided a wonderful opportunity to highlight the important and diverse roles of women in Irish agriculture and to inspire the next generation of students considering careers in the sector.
John Chapman from Farm Relief Services also shared his extensive knowledge and experience with the students, discussing the work of FRS and the important role the organisation plays in supporting farmers and the wider agricultural community.
The visit gave our students an excellent opportunity to connect what they are learning in Agricultural Science with the realities of the Irish agricultural industry and to hear first-hand from professionals working within the sector.
A sincere thank you to Ellen and John for taking the time to visit our school and share their knowledge, experience and career insights with our students. It was particularly lovely to welcome Ellen back as a past pupil, and we wish her every success in her new role with Carbery.
