Ms. Majella O Neill Talk, Wellness Week, April 12th.

The school sincerely appreciates the time and effort that nutritional therapist Majella O’ Neill has given to the school. She gave a presentation for an hour and a half to our Third and Sixth years in preparation for their upcoming exams. She told the students that what they eat can have a huge impact on their lives. She gave a detailed presentation on healthy eating, exercise, sleep and positive kindest to maximise their performance in the exams. The students were reminded that deep breathing works and what to buy when they are food shopping. Majella’s talk was amazing and inspiring to all. Thanks to Ms. Orla O’ Sullivan and the Wellness Team for organizing.

Skibbereen Hospital Visit, Wellness Week, April 12th.

Our Wellbeing Week finished off on a high note this week with a visit to Skibbereen Community Hospital. Our second years spent  a few weeks planning the trip. The hospital staff were presented with a cake. The students spoke to the residents and played music for them. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The school would like to say a huge thank you to Longs coaches who provided transport free of charge. We'd like to say a huge thank you to the Staff and Residents of Skibbereen Hospital for hosting us and to our students who we are very proud of. Many thanks to Ms. Orla O’ Sullivan, Ms. Deirdre Hennigan and Ms. Avril Cooke for organising.

 

"Generation Z" Talk, Wellness Week, April 11th.

A good crowd turned out to listen to three very good speakers on teen issues last Thursday. Mr. Harry McGann, media pundit gave a very informative talk on cyber safety. Ms. Kirstyn Donoghue spoke very well on a parents perspective on the daily struggles faced by trans and non binary children. Mr. James O Mahony, Chair of Kinsale Youth Support Services spoke equally well on youth mental health. The event was organized by Ms. Alicia O Sullivan, 5th Year. Alicia is a member of the student council and also a member of the National Executive of Comhairle, the National Youth Council of Ireland. Alicia gave a student’s perspective on all the above issues. The event was supported by Skibbereen Lions Club and proceedings were streamed online. The school was also delighted to welcome Minister of State JIm Daly.

Congratulations to Skibb RFC's U18 1/2 Boys Rugby Team!

The School Community would like to congratulate Skibbereen’s U18 1/2 Rugby team on becoming joint All- Ireland Champions yesterday. Well done to all our lads on the team. Well done Jamie, Jonathan, Jason, Darren, Gavin, Michael, Oisin, Adam, Joseph, Seamus, Euan, Brian, Sam and Jack. Fantastic achievement lads!!

Skibbereen Library Visit, Wellness Week, April 10th.

As part of our wellbeing week in school, we were delighted to be joined by staff members from Skibbereen Library. Today Ms. Veronica Whooley and Ms. Mary Sheehy gave up their time to spend the entire day with us promoting all of the wonderful services the library provide, all free of charge. They devoted their time entirely to fifth and sixth year students. There was a specific focus on wellness and wellbeing. The students had the opportunity to look at books on this area that have been specifically recommended by leading psychologists and by our renowned psychologist Ms. Jo Boniface. All the students were informed about the free courses on offer in the library, access to free journals and books. The fifth and sixth years were targeted as part of our school's initiatives to adequately prepare our students for accessing information for project work for exams and specifically for third level!! Skibbereen library is the second busiest in the county and we could see why after today!! It is a great resource in our community.  We would like to sincerely thank them for coming to us and to thank the fourth years on their social placements: A. Humphries, K. Torba and T. Crosby. Mr. Stephen Redmond Talk, Wellness Week, April 10th 2019.

Today we are very thankful to Steve Redmond for giving up his time to talk to Third Years about his experiences of swimming. It was a very informative talk regarding his trials and tribulations where everyone was encouraged to do their best and keep going. He spoke about the importance of having a belief system. He mentioned the importance of wellness and having a wellness week. He reminded everyone the support that is available to everyone when times get tough. He motivated all the students to keep going for last few weeks and to work hard for the junior certificate!! Thanks very much to Ms. Orla O’ Sullivan for organizing.

Health and Fitness with Mr.Alistair Harte, Wellness Week, April 9th.

Mr. Alistair Harte and his Business Partner, Ms. Alice Cooper gave an excellent talk on health, nutrition and wellbeing to 5th Years today. Alistair and Alice run two successful gyms in Skibbereen and Clonakilty. Alistair recently won a European bodybuilder title. They both refused to accept any payment for their time and services today. Many thanks to them and to Ms. Fiona Ronan, Careers Department for organizing.

Mr. Ray Langan, Motivational Speaker, Wellness Week, April 8th.

Mr. Ray Langan, Motivational Speaker ran a workshop for First and Second Years as part of the school’s “Wellness Week”. He spoke about study skills, diet and exercise, exam prep and daily organization. His methods and actions were a big hit. Many thanks to Ms. Fiona Ronan, Careers Department for organizing.

"Get Going Get Rowing" Indoor Championships, April 5th.

The School Community would like to congratulate the 41 First Year Rowers from class 1C, 1D and 1E who took part in Rowing Ireland’s Indoor Championships in Neptune Stadium last Friday. They all performed amazingly. Well done to the medal winners. Many thanks to Ms. Emily Dulohery from Skibb Rowing Club who coached the teams. Many thanks to the PE Department for their support and to Mr. Fitzgerald for accompanying the teams on the day.

Overnight Gaisce Trip to West Cork Secret Adventure Centre, April 1st and 2nd.

Well done to Ms. Orla Courtney and her Gaisce Team who braved the various challenges and elements in West Cork Secret, Kilbrittain last Monday and Tuesday. Tough Crowd!!!

Senior Women's Rugby Team at Munster School's Blitz, April 3rd.

Well done to our Senior Women’s Rugby Team who performed admirably in CIT today. They lost to St.Ann’s, beat Ursulines and Thurles CS and drew with Abbeyfeale the eventual tournament winners. Many thanks to the Leaving Certs on the team for all their service to the School over the last three years. Many thanks to Skibb RFC (Sana, Mark and Eimear) for the season. Many thanks to Daveron and Mary in Schull Community School and to our Mr. Chris O Brien for accompanying the team. Great season folks!

Bishop Buckley visited today, April 3rd 2019.

5th Year Geog River Study in Manch, Friday March 29th

TY Farming Module Trip to Drinagh Co-Op and Crowley Farm, Mar 29th

The TY Module Group and their teacher Mr. PJ Fitzgerald took a Field Trip to Drinagh Co-op in Drinagh last Friday. The Staff gave them a tour of the operations. They then went on to visit Mr. Michael and Mrs. Marguerite Crowley on their Open Farm in Bauravilla. Many thanks to Mr. Fitzgerald, the Staff of Drinagh Co-Op and the Crowley Family.
