Friday's For Future in SCS.

TY Student Saoi O Connor gave an excellent speech to her schoolmates today about “Friday’s for Future”, the worldwide student protest movement on Climate Change. This movement began in Sweden 29 weeks ago when Swedish student, Gretta Thunberg walked out of her school to protest at the lack of action by government’s worldwide to this world wide disaster. Saoi herself has protested outside City Hall in Cork City for the last 9 Friday’s. She and others like her have addressed the Dail and are in the media recently. They want the Irish Government to keep its emissions promises that it made at the Paris Accord.

The School Community is very proud of Saoi’s endeavours and support her in demanding that our government and others tackle Climate Destruction. The School will be part of next week’s mass walkout involving students from over 60 countries.

2nd Year Boys Basketball Team through to County Play Offs

What a difference a year makes!

A mere twelve months ago, we left Castletownbere feeling deflated, when we suffered a one point defeat having been comfortably in the lead early on. The boys from the Beara Peninsula do not go down easily. Castletownbere went on to win the county. This time, our team left with a healthy 37 to 19 point victory. Last year, Bantry put us out of the county in a three point defeat on our home court. This year we had a comfortable win against them.

Our top scorer and M.V.P. Colm Harrington took the game to the Beara boys and threw himself into the action. He also single-handedly kept the famous Dylan Crowley scoreless in the first quarter, tormenting his talented opponent with controlled aggression. No one works harder than Colm and he deserves great credit for giving it everything.

The athletic Darragh Dempsey's game is going from strength to strength and he played a stormer. His calm demeanour added a maturity to our play that is found more often in senior teams. While some of our players were playing with energetic abandon, Darragh brought order. Eoghan Cawley also stepped up in attack, opening up the zone with excellent cuts and contributed an excellent ten points.

Tom Kavanagh's outstanding rebounding was also a strong feature in the game and when a team is controlling the boards on both sides of the court, they are usually winning. While our defence was admirable (led by the energetic Fionn O'Connor), there was much in our offence that can be improved. We lacked patience at times, our outside shooting was poorly executed and like the first years, our ability to break down a 3 2 defence had to be questioned at times. For all that, it is hard to criticise this fantastic group of boys.

All seventeen members of the squad played their part and their spirit is a tonic. They have proved that it's not whether you get knocked down that counts but whether you will get up and fight again.

Onwards and upwards boys.

1st Year Boys Basketball Team through to County Play Offs

Congratulations to the first year boys basketball team who are through to the county play offs after a battle against Castletownbere on Tuesday. The much anticipated trip to the beautiful Beara Peninsula, shrouded in a thick veil of fog on this occasion has come and gone and our first years have come through a stern test which showed the strengths and frailties in our play.

I will begin with the strengths. The dazzling skills of Luca Harte, Dylan Hourihane and Brian O'Driscoll sparkled in our latest nerve tingling battle. Luca is as valuable to our defensive set up as Robbie Minihane to our cadets and he pulls the strings in attack. Brian provided the guile and skill to break through a resolute 221 zone defence and despite carrying an injury, threw himself into the defence. His beautifully taken 3 pointer when the match was on a knife edge sealed the victory for our side and brought his scoring tally to 10 points.  However, for overall work rate, sticking to his player like glue, determination and skill, Dylan Hourihane deserves the M.V. P. award on this occasion. Dylan was also our top scorer in this tough encounter scoring 13 of our 35 points.

Our supremacy in the first quarter looked like we were going to cruise through the rest of the match but the events of the second quarter show the enormous amount of work ahead for our team should we have ambitions to go forward.  While Brian kept the pressure on, Olan Hurley popped in a lovely shot from the top of the zone and Simas scored his two free shots. The gaping holes in our defence were exploited to perfection by our opponents and the Westerners came roaring back. A man to man defence is only effective when everyone defends and having two players standing is nothing short of basketball suicide. We were also gulity of a huge number of missed close shots.

The panic that set in during the second quarter continued for the rest of the game and Castletownbere took full advantage of our defensive frailties. The momentum shifted sharply, the huge home crowd transformed into life and the pulse became louder in the hearts of the home team. Earlier this year when our under 16 boys fought back from 18 points down to win by three against the Kerry champions Killorglin, all those from S.C.S felt the waves of exhilarating excitement. This time we were left feeling drained.

Castletownbere took the lead, 28 to 26, with three minutes left on the clock. Dylan responded showing determination and resolve. Jack Hawley flung a no hoper at the basket. It went in. The sides are level. CTB Jack fires up another and miraculously that goes in too. For Chris and I , the tension is unbearable and the stadium has become a cauldron  packed with animated spectators. Chris leaves the hall. The calm, efficient uniform and first aid expert can't take all this excitement.  We are two  points  down again, the clock is ticking. Time goes quicker when you are behind! In a break away frenzied attack, Olan calmly popped in another. We are level again. Perhaps we can breathe now. Dylan throws himself at the opposition with Thomas O'Mahony - like intensity, strips the ball from his opponent and attacks, scoring another. Our passionate second years are the best supporters in the country. We are two points up and the  seconds are draining when  Brian pops in the most beautifully taken 3 pointer. He jumps with joy and smiles. The relief is palpable and the spirit of SCS is alive. We survived this battle but going forward to the knock out stages, we will have to address many aspects of our play.

Our win today will not define us. Our response will.

U16 Girls Basketball Team in All-Ireland Action

After a gruelling league campaign in the 'A' league, our fantastic under 16 girls team took on three of the best school teams in Ireland in Ballymahon, County Longford. Our mission was a place in the All Ireland finals and we went there feeling optimistic. The close battles we had undergone in the Rebel county had strengthened our resolve and determination to succeed. Some of the girls have also benefited from the wealth of knowledge they have gained from the Skibbereen Eagles club and the passionate David Quinn whose attention to detail is exemplary and the wonderful Pat Dwyer who has transformed Lia Hogan into a formidable talent. We also learned a lot from our game against Pat's  amazing unbeaten under 14 squad who hit us with everything a genius coach can conjure and an intense full court pressure defence we have tried to emulate ever since.

What is truly fantastic about Skibbereen,  Union Hall and the villages that surround us, is their support for our teams when they reach an All Ireland and here in S.C.S, we really appreciate the support. On this occasion, parents, neighbours, friends and relatives all came together to make the long journey possible. I cannot speak more highly of the girls in this team. They make no excuses, never complain, have fantastic team spirit,  work and train hard and makes things happen and they deserve the support that so many of you gave them.

The scoreline of 55 to 18 in our first game against St Louis reflects the supremacy of our girls in our opening encounter.  Here, we came bolting out of the blocks, took on board Pat Dwyer's advice and flung everything we had at the Mayo side in a full court press and the Western girls had no answer. Every member of our squad gave their all and even the drooping basket on the right side of the court had no effect on our performance.

Clonaslee provided a sterner challenge and we had to step up our game in every respect. Captain Maria O'Mahony and the supremely talented Mallaidh O'Neill controlled the defence. Ellie O'Donovan, Aine MacCarthy and Lia Hogan were offensive threats throughout with Ellie putting in an inspired performance and top scoring Eabha Lucey, Niamh Connolly, Caoimhe Quinn and Kellie Lynch threw themselves into the challenge and played their part. But the effects of two games in a row was taking its toll on our side and some of our girls were showing signs of fatigue. With the energy draining from our limbs, Mallaidh stepped up and put in an amazing performance sprinting back and defending when others were weary. For all our brilliant effort, we were very glad to hear the final whistle blow giving us a 37 to 30 point victory.

The final game was always going to be the decider and on paper, there was little between the teams except Ballymahon had home advantage and knowledge of the rather strange home baskets!  We also knew they would pack the hall so our preparation had to be spot on. Ms O'Mahony had researched the correct food that should be eaten before matches and the girls were aware of it. Of course, hearing advice and taking it on board are totally different.  Perhaps our choice of food before a big final left a lot short of what was required?  One thing is for sure, our girls looked exhausted before the final match. Whether this was brought on by the long journey up the night before, the exhausting efforts of the day or the effects of all that saturated fat in the system , we will never know but we certainly did not hit the court running and some of our best players were unable to play. Ballymahon raced into a comfortable 17 point lead and our girls didn't really get going until the second half. The lethargy of the first half contrasted sharply with our play in the second half and like we have done all season long, we came roaring back into the game. Mallaidh and Lia were paramount to our recovery and both girls played sensational basketball, refusing to die down with every cell in their system. Early in the fourth quarter, we had torn the home sides lead apart and reduced it to a shred. A mere 4 points separated the sides and the crowd were a hushed force now, a nervous tension palpable. But  the full court pressure left a toll on our fouls and the loss of Maria was a hammer blow to our side. More girls were fouled out leaving our side a spent force and Ballymahon stretched their lead to ten points roared on by a passionate home crowd.

We will leave with the words of John Wooden which are a fitting conclusion here:

'We win or lose within ourselves, giving all, it seems to me is not so far from victory'.
